We did it again!

Early this morning I read that the titans have signed another person from our farm club/feeder program ( the colts ) Jake Scott signed a 4 year deal with the Titans. This is a nice addition and sould make the loss of Jacob Bell a little easier to swallow! Especially if Bengi stays around.

I think that all we are lacking is a good Proven # 1 WR and I will call this off season a TREMENDOUS success! I am excited about this up comming year. Jimmy I know its early but what do you think about throwing some predictions out there?

don't start dancing yet
Jake Scott got signed for 5 million a year, whereas Bell was 6 million a year.

1 million difference is not a lot of money in the greater scheme of things.

Based on what has happened so far (losses of proven players, signings of older players with injuries, missed opportunities...) I think that the only way FO can salvage an otherwise decidedly mediocre free agency is by pulling off a big signing of a #1 WR.  Our most glaring and obvious problem has not been addressed, but now we have a new problem... the left side of our defensive line is weak unless the Freak revives a fledgling career (I love the guy and hope he pulls it off, but it's a gamble).

Fisher/Reinfeldt stated their commitment to finding "playmakers" on offense this offseason. Let's not celebrate lineman signings, when the whole time we could have kept Bell anyways...  I've said it before and I say it again, Crumpler's knees must remain a huge question mark for us to have gotten him so cheaply...  Crumpler costs half as much as our newest Guard, Jake Scott...  Again, I'll be there cheering for all these guys on Sunday, but there is no reason we should celebrate our free agency.

As it stands right now, we do not have the talent to get back to the playoffs.

Beans
You have lost your mind!! That last comment is ridiculous!!! The only thing we have lost is a DE that was a product of the system. We lost a OL that has just been replaced by a more proven OL. We kept our # 1 WR and our # 1 TE from last season and then upgraded on top of keeping Scaife with Crumpler. For you to say that we do not have as good of a team as we did last year is crazy bro.

You were probably freaking out last year when we lost Bennett, Wade, and Henry, werent you?

Come on open your eyes and have a little faith!!!

Someone once said "Vince Young bleeds two toned blue!" But I disagree, because The Great One Doesnt Bleed!!

Not at all
Last year I was ok with letting those receivers go.  They weren't top tier guys to begin with.  I was a big Henry fan, but also like Lendale and think he does a decent job.

But to clarify, we were not a legitimate playoff team last year. Excluding a week #17 win against Indianapolis backups we won only 1 game against a team with a winning record (Jax week 1).

If we don't get ourselves a real #1 receiver we're not going to improve.

Love the Titans, but I'm a realist to the bitter end.

Not a legitimate playoff team?
Your not a realist, your a pessimist, and your cynical.

What you're saying is that no matter what else we do at every other position on this team it will not help us improve unless its a WR?

So getting a Pro Bowl TE is not an improvement? We will improve through the draft no? Getting a DE and a WR in the 1st 2 rounds would also help us improve no?

Love the Titans, but I'm a realist to the sweet end.

That is a straw man argument...
Now let's see...

If I really thought that "no matter what else we do at every other position on this team it will not help us improve unless its a WR?" I would be an idiot, right, or just someone that knows nothing about football.

But that wasn't my point.

Our D-Line is weaker, our O-line is the same and though we have a former pro-bowler at Tight End his best days are possibly behind him, and the risk of his injury hampering his play is clearly reflected in the contract he signed.

Could it be Bud Adams is so pissed at the wads of cash he wasted on David Givens he has sworn off approving big deals on receivers?  Who knows...  But before Free Agency started I think we can all agree that the #1 objective was to get some weapons for Vince.  Well, they got one, maybe...  it's hardly a slam dunk.

I'll be active on these boards, and when all is said and done and the roster clarifies itself as we approach mini-camps I'll be sure to share my opinion about how likely we are to make the playoffs.  As of right now, not so much...

Argggh, I feel like punching someone in the face.

I know we've all gone back and forth lately...
but you're obviously a passionate and informed fan.  I definitely appreciate the banter... even when ya drive me nuts!  Sports are boring as hell when everyone agrees.

Will you share
your opinion on how likely we are to make the playoffs in the legitimate or illegitimate sense?

And it wasn't a straw mans argument, it was just a question. Your answer depended on whether or not it was an argument or as I would prefer to call it a friendly debate among fans.

Maybe someone here should really grow some balls and just go punch someone in the face for getting on their nerves.  This way they can come on here and share with all of us what follows the incident.  Maybe jail, maybe some court dates, or it might even lead into one of you suing someone cuz you get your ass kicked. Would be interesting convo regardless of how it plays out.

Legitimacy
My point about that was as follows:

I think we were the weakest team of the 12 that got in the playoffs.  Vegas lines certainly thought so...

Legitimate?  Yeah...in the sense that we didn't cheat and made it in, but we weren't legitimate contenders (i.e. threatening to win a game...)

Every team that gets deep into the playoffs can cite at least a moment in the season where the gods smiled on them, but dude...  How can you win in San Diego, in the playoffs, without an offense?

by BeansCarter on Mar 10, 2008 6:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Really
I thought we were at least better than the Bucs and the Redskins. And before playoffs started I would have even said the Giants.(shows how much I know)

We should have beat S.D. the fist time we played. And if not for 1,000 blown coverages and some a--hole fumbling, I think we would have beat them in the playoffs.

Just my opinion.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 10, 2008 6:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

San Diego
I was at that San Diego game.  Lack of instant replay on that 4th down "catch" in the last minute meant the blown call could not be overturned and we were robbed of the W.

That one hurt; we outplayed them.  We shut down LT, and we knocked that whiny little prick Rivers out of the game.  However, same problem as always, D played lights out and our O didn't produce.

Second time around... looked good up until the half didn't it?  After that we got chewed up.  That's a talented team over in SD.  I really despise them.

Bucs beat us in regular season, Redskins were a very well coached team that got hot down the stretch.

In any case, I don't think anybody thought we were winning a championship last year.

Seriously?!
"we were not a legitimate playoff team last year..."

How does a team that makes the playoffs, not be a 'legit' playoff team?  If Big Albert doesn't get hurt we'd have won 2-3 more games!?!?!  The Titans can't control the schedule, plus we avoided doing what the Browns and many others did: CHOKING.

I can't believe you seriously wrote that statement... makes me wanna go punch my coach.

For real
Or how bout the call at the end of the S.D. game? That should have been a win.

and lets not forget...
Dinger > Chow.  That's out biggest off-season move.

Sometimes sucess takes addition by subtraction.  It'll be nice having an O-coordinator who knows what to do in the red zone!

YES!
I never even thought to look at the 'Dinger "re"-signing as a free-agency win.  I'm very bullish on this move and think that with such a young offense, the "disciplinarian" angle is likely to pay off.

Norm Chow, quite simply did not produce (mind you, it's hard to blame Brandon's 'hands of brick' on poor ol' Norm).  And since it looks like 'Dinger will (more or less) get the same players, we'll see how much of that was Chow's fault.

Thanks for pointing out our most obvious upgrade...OC.

There we go
I was looking for the Chow to Dinger comment in this debate.  Add that into the mix, and I think overall the offseason is going B- ish.

But c'mon guys, really, I'm a fan and all - but the Titans were not going anywhere deep in the playoffs last year.  I'm rarely right about anything in sports, but last year when the Titans were 6-2 my coworkers can attest I predicted 10-6 and a first round playoff exit (and had stuff thrown at me).  That'll be the last time I'm right in awhile, probably.

Drastic offensive improvement is absolutely needed for them to be a contender next year.  But I do count the Dinger return in that column.  If they have 9 passing touchdowns or fewer with 'Dinger at the helm, I'll be dumbfounded.

I would still like to see the addition of a scary fast WR.  I'm OK with that in the draft though (although McCareins is interesting - he was speedy when we let him go).  I'm not too enthusiastic about the idea of them paying megabucks for an established super-star WR that another team has cut loose - particulary one of the "personalities".  I'd be happier with a good 1st round WR in the draft, and another experienced DE pickup in the FA period.

I heard.......
J. Bell does lots of blow and spends every waking moment with hookers.

J. Scott does neither so he automatically sucks in my book.  The Titans should never have gotten rid of J. Bell.

Let's see if we can bring in Ray Lewis (murderer), Rae Carruth, Lawrence Phillips, Ricky Williams (my favorite dope smoker), Michael and Marcus Vick, Pick one of the Bengals, and let's go way back with Golden Richards.  If we can bring all these guys in I'm sure we would have a winning team.

After all, that's what really matters.

Winning is the only thing.  Losers suck.

still a lot of work to do i think
I see Beans' point - Crumpler & Kearse, two of our three biggest signings, aren't sure things.  I consider Jake Scott to be the other big signing.

I do think we have upgraded at TE (giving Crump and his health the benefit of the doubt), we have probably broken even on the Oline, and probably aren't quite as good on the Dline (lack depth and big ?s for the Freak).  I think everything else is the same at this point; this for a team that barely clinched the very last playoff spot.

We need more help to catch up to where Indy and JAX are at this point in time, esp at WR.  But there isnt a legit #1 FA WR left out there, we would have to trade for it, and I really dont think that is going to happen with MR.  IMO, Gage and RD. Williams are really #3 type/caliber WRs in this league.  So we really need help there i think.

On the bright side, I think DJ Hackett is still out there, he's a good #2 caliber WR when healthy i have heard, that would help.  Also, signing W. Dunn to a 1 or 2 yr deal would be nice/smart help, as long as it's cheap.  And this looks like a good year for RBs in the draft, as well as TEs (I really like the fast Purdue kid).  So we can still get there, or pretty close, I think.
also, on a positive note, i think VY and the new OC will do a lot better than VY and Chow did, so we got that going for us potentially.
