Salary Caps
Alots being made of re-signing Albert. I would love to see him stay in TN but I am curious and concerned as to how it would effect contracts with other players, existing Titans such as Courtland and CJ as well as future possible WRs (our biggest need IMO). I agree with what I have heard from the Titans staff about it taking time to groom a collage player to be a be a top rate WR so that leaves signing a free agent that can make a dfference. Free agents are expensive. Free agent WRs have egos and attitudes. How does this all play out. Personally I would love to see a Detroit defection. Not sure if its possible but you at least know he would be hungry.

Signing Albert
wouldn’t effect anything really with Finnegan. They locked him up before this season started. CJ is a rookie so he is locked up for 4 years probably (I can’t remember the terms of his deal). I would say they could sign Albert and still get a receiver like Housh, but I really don’t see them doing both.
Don’t be surprised to see Albert playing somewhere else next season. They are all about value, and if they think they have a decent replacement in Jason Jones, they will let Albert walk and draft another defensive tackle.

Who is
That 6’5" 380 DT the Jets are all in love with wanting to draft? Housh would be a good pick up (every Steelers game would be a blast). Like I alluded too earlier, I think Calvin Johnson would be a great pick up and probably the best deal.
Is Calvin Johnson going to be a FA?
Isn’t this only his second or third year?

I'd be very surprised
if he is resigned. Too much money out there behind teams that need defensive help, and the Titans have a lot of depth and good coaching at the position. They’ve become a DL factory.
Great player, but he wants to get paid, and this kind of thing is what FA was created for.
If only we could learn to grab players from a WR factory.

Not sure how spending the bucks for a top WR would tie into Fish’s “Run First and Often” mentality. It seems that the focus is on O line, and Defense.
If they did have a sudden change of heart and picked up a really good WR I am not sure how much of an incentive playing for the Titans provides to them vs. a typical west coast style offense where they will get more looks. IMO that means we would have to pay more than the going cost just to get them.
Edited to add...........
Could just draft a Safety and move Griffin to WR. I dont see him arguing with that one. LOL
Ok so I should have
Checked the individuals I named and how they applied to the post but the premises is still sound. There is alot of well founded concern over losing Albert but not much thought over how signing his check would actually affect the team. What we have now, what needs to be re-signed, and what we need to pick up in the draft and free agency. Your Thoughts?
It depends on if there is a salary cap after 2010 and if 2010 is an uncapped year.
In an uncapped system, Tennessee will never be able to match what places like Dallas, NE, NYC, DC etc. can pay. Hell, to an extent, even Houston is gonna have a marked advantage in an uncapped world. TN will still have about the same effective cap as they have currently. And yeah, it’s not impossible to win in that environment, but you have to be very smart, build through the draft, and let high-priced guys walk—much like they do now. Matter of fact, I would expect that the Titans’ de facto salary cap (what they could afford) is probably rather close to what they’ve been spending year-in, year-out now.

I'm really sceptial when people say that the NFL is going to go uncapped
The whole reason the current CBA has the uncapped seasons at the end (like most of the previous CBAs did) is to get the owners negotiating early because the vast majority of them want nothing to do with an uncapped league.

35 million
That is how much the Titans are going to be under the cap going into the offseason. This new regime seems to have the philosophy of building through the draft and resigning their own guys.
I truly believe the Titans will resign Haynesworth no matter how much it takes, I think it was their plan all along (as long as he had another great year)
Jason Jones is going to be a great player but he is no Haynesworth and never will be. They are different players. Albert is a big guy who occupies blocks so others can make plays, while Jones is more of a penetrating type
I don’t think the Titans will sign Housh because of the new philosophy, they will save that money to resign their own guys down the road
Look for the Titans to maybe make a trade for the Rams Torry Holt – for possibly a 3rd or 4th round pick and look for the Titans to finally take a WR in either the first or second round this year
As for an uncapped year, I truly believe that something will get done and it will not come to that, but if it does, drafted players will sign for 6 years, giving the club a longer window with said player and allowing the team to resign their players to long term deals in year 3 or 4 if they’re any good
I have given up on them ever drafting a WR in the first 2 rounds

See
that’s what I am thinking about Haynesworth.
I remember last year someone asking Jeff about Albert he said, “Albert isn’t going anywhere”.
Think it was the first Charger game, but maybe Jeff was saying that about THIS year, I don’t know..
Just hope your right big Rob!
don't you think we would've signed him last year if they don't intend on letting him go?
it would have been waaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper. there’s no way our front office is dumping that much cash on any player, especially one who is injury prone. this is the last year we have haynesworth. simple as that. it was awesome seeing him cheering on the dline during the pittsburg game. it shows that he just wasn’t playing for a contract this year – it shows that he really cares and wants this team to win the superbowl. i never thought i would say this, but fat albert is a class act.

They
sure tried, and came close it soudned like, but maybe they thought by franchising they would get his 100% every play, instead of maybe 90% or somewhat if they had given him a deal. Now they might not have that choice and will HAVE to sign him. That’s what I’m hoping :)
I'm not sure I agree that it would have been cheaper last year.
My impression was that Albert wanted to be paid like the top DT, period. Last year, this year, he wanted top dollar. Bottom line, he wanted the money he could potentially earn THIS year, and he wanted it last year, or he was gonna take his chances with the Franchise tag and hit FA when he got the chance. Remember, they offered him a deal that was the equal of the one that guy in Chicago signed, and Albert turned it down. So he wanted top dollar, regardless of year.

I would like to see the Titans make a move for him… He’s a beast!
I can’t see Zona holding onto him for much longer.

Draft order
It’s hard to predict before free agency but I would say the Titans draft order would look something like this:
1. CB
2. WR
3. Traded for WR Torry Holt
4. S
5. G
6. DE
7. QB
