Steelers Terrible Towel = American Flag???????

Bullucktt_medium
I'm reading steeler blogs and message boards....and I'm amazed at the amount of uproar over White and others stomping on the yellow kitchen towel.

I'm watching ESPN and Tom Jackson and Trent Dilfer is flipping out about it.

I'm reading SI and Don Banks is beside himself that the Titans would do that.

I can understand some Steeler fans being pissed at that....understandable....

But I think the reaction to this is way overblown....it isn't like the yellow kitchen towel is the American flag or anything.....

The steeler fans were not even in their own stadium......do they not think waving that yellow kitchen towel wasn't disrespectful.  I went to Reliant stadium last week and although I yelled and cheered for the titans, I can understand the texan fans being mad at me....

I just don't get why so called impartial pundits are thinking this was such a big deal.....

And for a really good laugh, you need to go to certain steeler message boards.....I litterally read people saying stomping on the towell was worse than pissing on the picture of the pope...

hahahahahahahahahahahaaha

it's just a freaking yellow kitchen or bar towel.....get over it....

but yeah, I didn’t think I’d ever see people get so freaked out over using a towel like a towel.

i thought it was a dumb move..

just because it is something to get the other team fired up about. it’s also dumb for cj to showboat before the endzone. instead of the tom jacksons and bill cowhers talking about a big win…this is what they discuss.

like i said, it was dumb….but i really don’t think it was a slap in the face to the steelers players or franchise, but to the fans that were waving them. i think white and bulluck were saying…get these out of our house. and PLEASE, people that have lower level playoff seats….don’t sell them to the other team’s fans. pittsburgh will travel well, if you are going to sell them, find a titans fan or here’s an idea….go to the dang game yourself!

People are idiots

Pathetic that it’s not Big Ben’s penchant for turnovers or their inability to keep the legendary Kerry Collins in check that infuriates them about this game, it’s a few of our players stomping on a towel. I’m really glad a piece of crap free towel made in China doesn’t represent our franchise. Hey, if the Steelers want to disrespect us right back, why don’t they go stomp on a large, flaming thumb tack. That’ll really incense the masses!

And people are up in arms about the fact that maybe we might possibly potentially play them again in the AFC championship game. Ummm….what? Our players shouldn’t do something because their actions might impact a game that likely will never take place (Given the state of the AFC I’d give each team a 50-50 chance in the divisional game. If this is indeed true, then the odds of the Steelers and Titans meeting in the AFC champ is 25%)? No, the media is right, as they usually are. This was an egregious lapse of judgment and because of this, we will now almost certainly get blown out by the Steelers 378-4 in the AFC Championship game

zackmann

aren’t you the guy that made the post last week about how we were going to have to biggest fall of any 12-2 team of all time? You aren’t even a real fan dude, as soon as we lost one game you cried like a little girl. You can’t tell Steeler fans too “get over it” when you act just like them when your team loses and cant just accept that this is the NFL and people do lose. I am a titans fan no matter what the record, you are a fair weather fan and I’m surprised anyone listens to any of your comments with any kind of merit.

Dude

You don’t know me.

I was on here when we stunk. So don’t think I’m some fair weather fan.

Yes, I thought we would lose this game. That doesn’t mean I didn’t cheer for them.

The definition of a fan isn’t someone who blindly thinks their team is invincible.

It was a reasonable argument that we would lose. We didn’t. I’m ecstatic to be wrong. Ok glad the titans showed those doubting then that they hadn’t peaked too early.

You do know the whole tennessean picked against them too?

If you shouldn’t listen to me, why did jimmy promote my diary? Why has he promoted a bunch of my diaries? Probably because I’m a fan who just speaks is mind in an entertaining way. It isn’t always sunshine about the titans. But I’m a fanatic about the titans.

How many times have you went to a titans road game wearing baby blue Titan gear?

Some of you have a warped sense of how a fan should act.

Pittsburgh

Their fans can be crazy at times, especially in terms of the psu, pitt rivalry so it’s not surprising to see them whining about the stupid towel that they brought into the Titans house. I hope we have a shot at them in the playoffs so Haynesworth and KVB can get a shot at a whole bunch of sacks. Their OL isn’t going to get better over a few weeks, it’s been bad all year, and Big Ben will always hold onto the ball too long.

…have won the game. Everybody and their brother thought they were gonna walk into LP Field and kick the crap out of the Titans. Hell, I thought that was gonna happen based on last week. Well, if you’re gonna have that kind of attitude, then you have to either put up or shut up.

And so now it is time for the Steelers to SHUT UP!

There’s a good chance that we’ll see the Steelers again this post-season and giving them bulletin board material is a bad idea. Instead of remembering this game as a beatdown, they’ll remember that they didn’t get respect and will get fired up about it.

O-Line is nowhere near good enough, but. . .

The Steelers are only one home playoff game away from a return trip to Nashville. Lost in the 31-14 towel stopping fest is the fact that this game turned on a couple of key plays. The Steelers may not need bulletin board material to get fired up for a potential rematch, but the Titans shouldn’t get complacent either.

It's the history.

Certainly you have no idea what the terrible towel is, and the history behind it and the man that created it.

You should listen to your fellow fans about how this was not a good move, and is just bulletin board material. Make it to the AFC Championship.. The steelers will be there, and they will bring their terrible towels.

Seriously?

They need bulletin board material to get fired up to play the AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME??

Seriously?

If that is the case, then maybe there is some other issue that needs addressing. Maybe how your quarterback might not turn it over 4 times.

“bulletin board material” is such bullshit.

Here is what Jeff Fisher puts on the bulletin board:

“IT’S THE FREAKING AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.”

They were talking about it on the radio this morning. I had no idea it meant anything.

BUT regardless, this is the crap that happens in a sporting event. I guarantee you no player out there knew anything about the history, and they meant no disrespect to whatever that is.

The only thing I am mad about is the fact that so many Titan fans sold their tickets to Steeler fans to let all of those towels in there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrible_Towel

Proceeds from sales of the Towel have raised over US$2 million for a Pennsylvania school which cares for people with mental retardation and physical disabilities.

So I guess LenDale is stomping on that.

As far as the Steeler fans in the stadium, you know that happens just about everywhere the team travels… No big deal.

You might also find this interesting:

Before a 1994 playoff game against the Steelers’ long-time rival Cleveland Browns, Steelers defensive tackle Brentson Buckner accidentally dropped a Towel that he was waving during the player introductions. Browns running back Earnest Byner stepped on the Towel yelling, “We don’t care about your towel. We’re going to beat you this time.” This act “provok[ed] other Steelers and Browns to mingle. Not affectionately.”35 The Steelers won the game 29–9.35

During the 2005 season, wide receiver T. J. Houshmandzadeh of the Cincinnati Bengals, wiped his feet on a Towel after he scored a touchdown.31 After the touchdown, the Bengals were unable to score again and the Steelers came back to defeat them 31–17.36

Hopefully another paragraph of redemption can be added to that.

I'm sorry man

I am just frustrated with this crap.

I’m frustrated that I got to the stadium yesterday and a third of my section who are usually wearing Titan jerseys were all wearing Black and Gold and waving some stupid yellow towel and booing the team that they “cheer” for every other week.

I’m frustrated that the Titans handed the “best team in football” their asses yesterday, and all anyone can talk about is a stupid little thing the players were doing on the sidelines after the game with some stupid little towel.

And I’m frustrated that Charlotte, NC is no bigger of a “market” than Nashville, but going into last night, that Panther team that had 300 rushing yards hung on em was the next big thing, while the Titans were also-rans with a better record.

Mainly, I am frustrated that it is Christmas week and I have to be at the office with not much to do.

I don’t mean to attack you though, man. You have been harmless the last few days posting over here.

Who cares about the "history?"

History had nothing to do with that game yesterday. That was a game between two teams with 106 players, 98% of whom were not alive when Terry Bradshaw was throwing touchdown passes. These players, on both sides, played that game because it was yesterday, not because it was 1978 or 2006. They played it because it was December 21st, 2008. And the #1 seed was on the line. Give me a freaking break about “history.” Newflash: they don’t care! Troy Polamalu was not thinking about Lynn Swann when Gage held on to that touchdown pass. Jason Jones was not thinking about Franco Harris when he was sacking your quarterback 3 and a half times and forcing three fumbles. I’m sorry, but they don’t care about what happened 30 years ago. Again, the Steelers did not invent football. The only thing the Titan players were pissed off about were all those stupid rags waving in their stadium because of all the fair-weather fans that showed up for this game.

History only gives us fans stuff to argue about. Quit feigning outrage.

As a diehard Steeler fan I have a hard time saying that the Titans stomping on the towel is disrespectful to the history of the Steelers or what it represents to Pittsburgh, blah blah blah. However it does (I think) make the Titans look cocky and disrespectful to the 2008 Steelers (as does Chris Johnson dancing before getting in the endzone, and not sitting on a last minute INT). We’ll see if the Steelers get a chance to redeem. . .

is that these two teams WILL meet in the afc title game and the steelers WILL win that game. now the steelers played horribly coughing up three turnovers but the real factor was lebeau using a very vanilla defense. i guarantee you that it won’t be vanilla for the playoffs. hat’s off to him for not tipping his hand for a game that had relatively little importance in the greater scheme of things. btw lendale white’s a complete f&%@ing moron (ever heard him speak?) and a wanna be thug so i’m not surprised that he would defile another teams icon like that.

Playing a vanilla defense in week 16 is sure to confuse all of your opposing coaches who surely don’t have access to every video of every snap you’ve played all year.

So unless he’s been holding back every snap the entire year then he’d be a moron to do it this week.

so what was it then?

letting an injured colts team come into your house and party with your women? or maybe the ravens game where you became the first team to be awarded a touchdown without the ball actually going into the endzone? or maybe losing to the giants? great you beat the ravens twice, and the perpetually overrated cowboys and the brady-less pats. hmmm, i smell bullshit!

2007 giants-no bye
2006 colts- no bye, every year they had a bye they tanked in the playoffs
2005 steelers- no bye , you should know this one dumbass

maybe your disinterest in homefield advantage has something to do with the fact that you guys are so used to the pats spanking your ass in the playoffs in your own house?

many would argue that the bye breaks up momentum while the WC winners can get on a roll. now crawl your retarded ass back behind the steel curtain, please

I smell more bullshit

Since the last time the Titans made it to the Super Bowl, there have been 18 conference champions. 13 of 18 have had first round byes. 10 of 18 have had home field advantage. I’d agree that first round bye is slightly more important than home field advantage.

stupid jackass

13-2. 62-35 against the steelers and colts, and we beat the ravens too. WHAT ELSE IS THERE???? no one has beaten us when our passing game has been even decent. twice this season, onces the receivers, once kerry, the passing game has sucked majorly and we lost those games, otherwise, we win.

WHY

are all of you tennessee fans getting hype like you just won the super bowl?

If you paid attention before the game, in interviews you can sense the Titans holding this as a big game, saying ‘You haven’t played football until you have played the Steelers’. They were getting hype for this game and played their hearts out after suffering a devastating loss.

On the other hand the steelers interviews went something more like this, “We already have the second seed and a bye and a home game sewn up so this game is just another game. It will let us play more loose and just play ball.” They wanted to play hard but wasn’t really concerned with the outcome, I think they were just trying out some new stuff to see what it would do in a real game.

One part of me feels like Mike Tomlin was trying to lose, or just didn’t care about the game especially if you look at during the game, we won the toss but instead of choosing the wind in the 4th quarter, (what you do if you are trying to win, like we did against Dallas), they chose to defer and kick the ball to start the game.

Then throughout the game they ran the dumbest ‘draw play’ that is so obvious what it is on situations where you would think they would attack and try to get yards, but instead run a draw play against an obvious Run Blitz? I know our O-coordinator is not smart but he isn’t retarded.

The whole game Ben could have made an easy pass to a RB who was wide open for a first down but instead threw it into tight coverage for a big play, once again trying to play ‘loose’ and see what would happen. No worries for losing. That could be a reason why he was so erratic with the football and fumbling it 4 times, he was loose and keeps trying to make a play even as he is being grabbed down, now I know he usually holds the ball and tries to make a play but after his first fumble, he usually just goes down or stops moving the ball around and just gets takes a sack when he gets grabbed and hit.

Then you look at late in the game when they still have a chance of coming back in the 4th quarter before the pick six. They run that draw play again, the obvious one that has never worked. Then they put in the rookie Wide receiver who we drafted who NEVER plays, and without hesitating Ben throws it up to him. The steelers were just playing around with you guys. They just were treating this as a practice. Then on the pick-6 nobody is really even going after the guy. It’s like running after your little brother or cousin on the video game when you want him to score to make him feel better. You aren’t really trying to tackle him but want him to feel like he is actually beating you.

The steelers lost. They were beaten. But a lot of things tells me that this game was not nearly as important as the past games they went into. We wanted the 2 seed. And thats what we were playing for.

Good Luck in the Playoffs.

Also you look at history

and only one #1 seed in the past 10-9 years in the AFC has won the Super Bowl.

only 7/18 of those number one seeds in the past 18 years since the new playoff format have gotten past the divisional round.

so if i am the #1 seed, I would be pretty nervous right now. You got a lot of teams in the playoffs with revenge on their mind.

not to mention

that team who did win the super bwol as the number one seed had already won a recent super bowl.

no what helps me sleep at night is that we finally lost, but in the Regular Season.

It was great loss so now we can end on a good note vs. Cleveland.
We have the media off us for sure so we can go under the radar into the playoffs.
In a grudge match, we have some revenge to settle with you guys.
We don’t have to play the 2 toughest teams in the AFC to win it, only one. (the ravens)
We still have a home-field game and a bye.

I am fine with Steelers fans playing down the loss. Fans should always believe in their team (as long as they are realistic about things), but saying that they did not care about this win is not logical.

by DonFrancisco on Dec 22, 2008 2:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

two points.

One, if my team mailed in a chance for a home field throughout intentionally I would be completely pissed off. If they did that it was a huge affront to their fans who would have gotten to see the AFC Champ. game in Heinz field. (Yes you still might but this would have put you in control of that.) Also if they didn’t go in to win it dont you think they would have taken out Ben and not let him get mauled?
Two, with an OL that lets their QB get sacked 41 Times in 15 games you are not likely to get close to the Superbowl and if you do the Giants bury Ben worse than we did.

by DZone on Dec 22, 2008 2:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Preach.

Yeah I’m getting the sense that a lot of Titan fans are taking this win way out of context as well. Sure, I’ll agree: It is a big win. But to prove something to me and the rest of the world (as it seems like a lot of you wish to do), then win the Superbowl.

Sure the road goes through Tennessee now, but the big difference here is that the Titans aren’t so sure where that road leads because they’ve never been there. This Pittsburgh team has taken the long road, and have reached the destination. Hopefully not to corny of a metaphor, but I think it gets the point across.

Along the same lines, you don’t want to put the pedal to medal when you start off on your journey… You’ll want to make sure you’ve got enough gas to get where you are going.

I hope you’re not the best that the Steelers have to offer.

The whole “You won because we weren’t trying” argument was lame in kindergarten and it’s lame now.

If Tomlin played his starters in a game that he was trying to lose then he’s a heartless, gutless, moron.

I am pretty sure that any member of the pro football Steelers would slap you for suggesting that they didn’t play to win the game.
