Predicting the Future...The Start of One of the Biggest Collapses of a 12-1 Team Ever
I went to the Titans-Texans game and I think I saw the start of one of the biggest late season collapses ever of a 12-1 team.
Losing to the Texans....Losing Haynesworth....
And I now think we lose to the Steelers, then lose to the Colts and limp our way into the 2nd round of the playoffs, where we lose to either the Colts, Steelers or Ravens.
It will be one of the biggest collapes ever....from 12-1 to losing 4 in a row...
I have no confidence in Collins...teams are stacking the box and our pathetic group of WR's can't beat single coverage. Against the Texans we were mostly throwing deep in order to get a flag thrown, not actually trying to make a completion.
The coaching staff is making bonehead decisions....plays are predictable and bland....run plays are taking too long to develop....pass plays might be the most low percentage pass plays in the league...
our defense is playing decent, but without AH and KVB, we are nothing...without AH we have no chance to stop the run....
Finnegan is playing his heart out, but his personal foul penalties are killing us.....
And teams can pick on Harper if they want....I thought the Texans were stupid for not continuing to throw at Harper....
We are all going to complain about going for it on 4th and 3 and not QB sneaking it on 4th and inches against the Texans...and with good measure....
those 2 calls are the start of what might be one of the biggest collapses by a 12-1 team ever....
if one good thing will come out of losing our next 3, it will be that maybe Schwartz doesn't get a head coaching job...

hey man....
i love this team…
i was in reliant cheering my voice out…I had about 5 different texans fans try to start something with me because I was so vocal….
I’m behind this team……
I’m going to be ecstatic on every win from here out….and will be crushed on every loss….just like i’m crushed now….
but i’m being entirely sane and objective when I think we might just see the start of an epic collapse……
lose to texans….check
lose haynesworth….check
lose to steelers….is that really a crazy thought?
lose to colts….is that really a crazy thought?
lose to either colts/steelers/jets/ravens……is that really a crazy thought?
it’s not like I’m saying we will lose to the lions or bengals….i’m saying that the lose to the texans will probably be the start of 3 losses to 3 really, really, really, really, really good teams…..

the titans
have beaten the ravens. they have beaten the colts. we’ll see how they stack up with steelers in a very meaningful game next week. lots of reasons for optimism. defensively kearse is playing very well right now, ball and jason jones are solid, we have plenty of time to heal injuries before first playoff game.
kerry is my biggest question mark. can he win playoff games for us if the opposing team stacks up against the run. also, like most of you, i’d like to see a lot more of bj on the field and a lot less of justin m.

On the flipside
The ravens game was a tossup and a weak personal foul saved us and I think we can all agree the colts have gotten better.
But I feel better about playing the colts jets broncos or chargers more than the steelers or ravens in the playoffs.

i am definitely of the mind
that our defense/team goes from elite to mediocre without albert. this has been demonstrated. the one bright side of him taking an injury like this is it will temper some of the bidding insanity if he ever sees the open market.

get a grip???
how am I talking crazy?
do you have a warm fuzzy feeling about the way we are playing?
do you feel good about our best 2 defensive lineup being injured?
do you feel good about the way collins and the WR’s can’t click or beat man to man coverage with no safety help?
do you feel good about playing quality opponents like Pitt, Indy and then either indy/baltimore/jets?
it’s not like I’m saying we suck and are going lose to crappy teams…..
I’m saying that at a point in the season where we need to be playing our best football, we are playing our worse and have now lost our best player and now face 3 straight playoff teams with the last of the 3 game stretch being do or die….
i’m not talking crazy…..
denying the uneasy situation we are in is more in line with not having a grip on the reality of the situation…

relax man
when is a team ever in an easy situation? you can go 18-0, lose the superbowl, and your season still sucked. might as well not start crying early. roll with it.
they lost an away game against a feisty divisional opponent fighting for it’s first winning season. you sound like the equivalent of that dude in aliens – “it’s all over man, game over!”

We're fans
we don’t need senses of urgency. we just need beer.
Seriously I’m sure they don’t like getting whupped by the Texans. I’m sure the offense will do it’s best to refocus. Gonna be a great test for them next week.

Nothing wrong with feeling uneasy
But I wouldn’t let it go too far.
When the Titans were undefeated it was because they were coming to play every game. They were beating everyone they were supposed to beat.
The game we just saw was equivalent to the Giants losing to the Bengals, or the Jets losing to the 49ers.
And considering the following:
- It was an away game
- It was a divisional opponent
- We have the playoffs locked up.
It’s not surprising that we started off flat. We’re 12-2 which last I checked wasn’t bad at all. I think we’ll all feel better if we come back next week and beat the Steelers. I would expect to seem them more fired up, since it’s the Steelers and we’ll be at home.
If we lose that game then I’ll start to worry, but I will still be fired up and optimistic until we’re done for the season.

our record means nothing right now....
we have a bye and a home game guaranteed….that’s all….having a better record than the steelers only matters if we win our first playoff game….
so right now our record means nothing really….
we are guaranteed 3 games…..we need to be playing better, not worse….
trying to dismiss this game (and to a degree the jets game) by saying we are 12-2 is turning your head and ignoring the scary trends that seem to be popping up….
I hope we win our first playoff game, regardless of what happens in the next 2 regular season games…i’ll be cheering my butt off in my living room….but I just can’t lie and act like everything is fine and put on a happy face……
our offense keeps getting exposed…our coaching staff is not making the best decisions….and our best player is hurt….and we have 3 straight games against the best of the best

how is what I'm saying makes me less of a fan?
SBNation was created by the same guy that created the most popular political blog on the net….with the philosophy of it being a “reality-based” community…
this isn’t a cheerleading site….being a fan isn’t always about saying you think your team will win…
please, go back and look thru the archives and you’ll see I’ve been here from nearly the beginning of this site….
i was at reliant today, decked out in blue, sitting above the titans tunnel, cheering my head off, and having texans fans wanting to fight me for being so vocal…..
i’m no less of a fan than you are….
just because I am nervous about the next 3 games based on what I’ve seen in the last 3 games, doesn’t make me any less of a fan…..
i’m nervous about our QB, our best player being injured, our coaches being idiots, our passing game, our inability to quit having personal fouls, and the quality of the opposition we have coming up…..
in one sense, losing to pitt and indy in the next 2 weeks doesn’t change our playoff standing, but losing our last 3 games is not a good way to go into a bye week playoff game….super bowl champions play their best at the end of the season not their worst……
and if we do lose our next 3…if, I said……it will be called one of the worst collapses ever….

OOPS
…anyway…
Huge Titans fan, and I see absolutely nothing wrong with this post. I feel the same way.
I was in shock to find out Coach Fisher (my username-sake on this site, and one of my most favorite sports figures) appears to be in denial mode about not having Bironas kick that final field goal. It was an idiotic, almost unconscionable decision that I’m glad we’re not used to under his tenure.
The dressing room mood was also quite disturbing. No one wanted to speak the truth about the FG decision. This is not the atmosphere you want to cultivate in the locker room before embarking on what will be a quite difficult playoff run.
In fact, I’m probably most disturbed about how this season is falling right in line with the season of another of my favorite teams. Look up the 2001 Seattle Mariners, see what they did in the regular season, see how inflexible coaching and un-clutch performing undid them in the playoffs (real quick), and you’ll see that we need as much positive momentum heading into the playoffs as we can get.
That certainly includes a thorough beatdown of Pittsburgh next week, which I certainly think we’ll do, but this game today was a nightmare that has elements to it that could really damage our playoff potential.
Nothing wrong with this post. It’s right on the money. Hopefully the team now wakes the hell up.

I’m sure you guys are die hard fans… I know zackman is, he’s been here from jump.
I think we will be fine if we stick to what works and not try to be something we aren’t.
The thing that sticks out to me in the 2 losses is that we got away from what works for us, the run game.
No way Kerry should be throwing this much. No way our best offensive threat should get 2 catches and 13 carries.
Lendale looked pretty good running the ball also.
If we’d have stuck to the running game a little more, we’d have pulled that game out. I firmly believe that.

I hate to say this, but...
I agree with Zackman. This team hasn’t beaten anybody with any talent in MONTHS. At this point, I have seen enough of Kerry Collins. Yes, at the beginning of the season, he played well. But that was a long time ago. Lately, he’s been good for at least one boneheaded pick per game, and he’s been regressing in the Red Zone. And oh BTW, this team is like 5-for-50 on 3rd Downs since the 2nd JAX game. What up with that?
Folks, this is NOT the way to close the season. See also: Bucaneers last year.

We know what this team is capable of.
And we know that we have good coaches. I have faith that our team will put it all together before the playoffs.
And really I agree with you… it’s not even our whole team that’s the problem. Our defense held the #3 offense in the NFL to 13 points. The problem is Kerry Collins. He’s been horrible. His passes are off target. When teams load the box to stop the run, he’s got to hit open receivers (and stop throwing to McCarens). Seems to me like the easiest thing to do if you’re a NFL QB. But I believe he will get it together or the coaches will make the proper adjustments.
If I am wrong then I would rather be surprised. I would rather believe my team will win and be wrong than expect them to lose and be right.

Hey zakmann
Just to make you feel better,
No matter what happens from here on out, this season cannot be worse than the collapse as the 2005 Colts, where they went 14-2 and went one and done in the playoffs.
Another epic collapse is the Colts 2004 season, where they did not lock up HFA, and as such had to play the Broncos in the WC Round. Winning handily, they moved on to Gillette Stadium where they got humiliated in a 20-3 defeat against the Pats, highlighting the effects of bad weather on a one-dimensional passing team.
Hope this helps to put things in perspective.
by BeansCarter on Dec 15, 2008 12:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
You are beyond obsessed
And, as usual, wrong about the Colts history.
In 2005, they played a bad game against the eventual Super Bowl Champion. That isn’t a collapse. it’s playing a bad game. It happens all the time. They played a team they annihilated during the regular season, the Steelers made the necessary adjustments, and beat them. That sounds eerily similar to what happened to the Titans this year w/r/t the Texans. Yesterday wasn’t a collapse; it was a bad game. It happens.
They clearly learned from that playoff loss as well. They actually won the Super Bowl in 2006. I’m going to make sure to remind you of that in every response to you, as you always conveniently forget.
Let’s look at the 2004 AFC Playoff Seeds:
1. Pittsburgh 15-1
2. New England 14-2
3. Indianapolis 12-4
4. San Diego 12-4
They sure blew it getting home field by not going 15-1. God they suck only winning 12 games, and not the requisite 14 to get a bye. They didn’t just “win handily” against the Broncos, they absolutely destroyed them, for the second year in a row. It was 35-3 at halftime. They had already lost to the Patriots that season, and they were clearly better than the Colts. Exactly how is it a collapse when they lose to a better team?
by mgrex03 on Dec 15, 2008 1:31 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
What, are you following me around now?
In 2005, they played a bad game against the eventual Super Bowl Champion. That isn’t a collapse. it’s playing a bad game
Playing a bad game that ends your season at home, after having had a monster regular season is a collapse. In fact, I’m not sure I could invent a description that is more accurate. It doesn’t matter that the Steelers went on to win the SB, they beat you in your house, and you were, up until that point, the better team. The Titans losing yesterday was a bad game, but when there is no consequence to losing, and it’s a close loss to a division rival, then I agree with you, it’s not a collapse.
Exactly how is it a collapse when they lose to a better team?
I agree with you that the Pats were definitely the better team… They were a bit better in the regular season, and far better in the post-season. What makes it a collapse is how big of an egg the Colts laid, actually. Losing 20-3 to end your season is embarrassing, no matter who your opponent is.
by BeansCarter on Dec 15, 2008 2:15 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You talk about the Colts a lot
Which is why I respond to you. Especially when you are wrong.
Just because you want to classify every year that the Colts didn’t win the Super Bowl a collapse, doesn’t make it so. When was the last time the #1 seed won the Super Bowl? 2003. That’s 8 teams that had “monster regular seasons” and didn’t win the Super Bowl. Did all these teams “collapse” as well?
Plus the Steelers had won 5 games in a row coming into that game. They got hot just at the right time, beat the Bengals, Colts, and Broncos on the road, then won the Super Bowl. Again, because you desperately want to classify it as a collapse doesn’t make it so.
Ditto in 2004. It was a collapse because “how big of an egg the Colts laid”? Over the past 5 seasons, 13 teams have lost in the playoffs by 17 or more points. Did they all “collapse” as well, because of the “egg they laid”?
And I do have to say, if the Titans lose their final 2 games in the regular season (more than a trivial chance), and they lose their first playoff game (anything can happen in the playoffs), that would be 4 losses in a row after starting 12-1. I fail to see how that would not be bigger than anything the Colts have done at the end of seasons, which was your original point.
by mgrex03 on Dec 15, 2008 4:55 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
All right, I'll answer your questions
Just because you want to classify every year that the Colts didn’t win the Super Bowl a collapse,
Really, I only recall mentioning two seasons, that the Colts didn’t win the Superbowl, that I consider a collapse. That leaves 40 other seasons that the Colts did not win the Superbowl and that I did not mention a collapse.
That’s 8 teams that had "monster regular seasons" and didn’t win the Super Bowl. Did all these teams "collapse" as well?
No. Not winning the Superbowl does not qualify as a collapse. Getting smoked out early in the playoffs where a team grossly under-performs expectations is. Would you say that making it to the SuperBowl is a collapse? I wouldn’t… Let’s take a look at what some other #1 seeds have done…
2007 – Pats lose in SB. Not a collapse.
2006 – Bears lose in SB. Not a collapse (unless you talk specifically about Grossman’s game-losing performance).
2005 – Seattle loses in SB. Not a collapse.
2004 – Eagles lose in SB. Not a collapse.
So, of those 8 #1 seeds since 2004, 4 of them made it to the Superbowl. It might have been 5, too, if the Colts hadn’t collapsed in 2005. Last I looked 4 out of 8 is 50%. A #1 seeding is a fairly good indicator that a team should go far. One and done for a #1 seed against a WildCard is not good, and has only happened twice in the past few seasons. In fact, the Colts are the only #1 seed to ever get knocked off by the #6 seed in at least the past decade.
Over the past 5 seasons, 13 teams have lost in the playoffs by 17 or more points. Did they all "collapse" as well, because of the "egg they laid"?
Actually, it’s not simply because the Colts lost by 17 points that they collapsed. No, they share the distinction with only two other teams over the past 5 season to have only scored a field goal or less in a playoff game. In 5 years, (or 55 NFL playoff games), this is one of the worst 3 offensive performances. For a team that is built around its offense, and boasts a superstud quarterback, 3 points is a major egg. A collapse of epic proportion, really. I was interested in going back a bit further to see if any other teams had laid any major stinkers like that in recent playoffs. Well the answer is yes, and I only had to go back to the ’02 playoffs. The Colts somehow managed to lose 41-0 against the Jets in the ’02 playoffs, making 2 of the 4 worst offensive playoff performances of the past 6 seasons exclusive property of the Indianapolis Colts. Over a period of 66 playoff games, the Colts lay claim to two of the worst 4 offensive performances. Kudos.
that would be 4 losses in a row after starting 12-1. I fail to see how that would not be bigger than anything the Colts have done at the end of seasons, which was your original point.
I dunno, don’t you think that one and done vs. the #6 from the #1 seed is pretty much as bad as it gets? I do.
Now, here comes the fun part where KingRichard posts a picture of Kevin Dyson trying to reach the end zone. It keeps getting funnier and funnier; I can’t wait!

Agree with Zack
And I hate to say it too. Here’s why:
1. The loss of Albert Haynesworth. This can’t be overstated. He means more to this team than anyone. We’re about to see how this team performs without him, but I suspect his presence alone will get 3-4 players on our defense into the pro bowl. He’s that good.
2. Our offense has become completely one dimensional lately. And in the absence of a quarterback/recievers that can stretch the field to keep the defense honest, we’re in trouble. This team relies on ball control/clock management. The the box is always stacked and you can’t beat man coverage, it’s a problem. Suddenly you’re drives are shorter, and the defense is on the field a lot more. A defense that just lost their best player.

You think the season is over?
Big Al will be back by the 2nd round and KVB too.
We have a good group of coaches and they will be looking at the last game to see where adjustments needs to be made and they will work on it during practice.
Lastly, the Titans are a proud team of professionals, they will perform better next game.
Kerry though has to stop taking too many chances like the last few games and go back to being a game manager. His first quarter INTs have hurt us.

no way we can win consistantly
especially in the playoffs if we start giving up 27+ points per game, which is almost certainly what will happen without big al. the ways it looks now, our first playoff game will be either the colts or ravens. we need our best player playing at least somewhat close to 100% to beat either of those teams

I hope you're wrong, zack.
But I fear you’re right.
Right now the chance I see of us having a second playoff game is if it’s against Denver or whoever comes out of the AFC East.
We have to play Pittsburgh, Indy, or Baltimore in the divisional round? We’re one and done. At least if the team keeps playing like it is right now.

1. I don’t think yesterday’s loss spells your demise. You lost to a good divisional opponent, and a hot one at that. In their stadium. By one point. Many great teams have lost tough games on the road against divisional opponents. They know each other best and the games are often competitive. We (Colts) should’ve lost in Houston, but Sage gave us life by trying to be Superman, and we stepped up from there for a close finish. If you can finish 5-1 or 4-2 in your division, losing some tough ones on the road, there is no disgrace.
Don’t panic. The Titans are a very good team who lost a game that many “experts” saw them potentially losing. Just beat Pittsburgh this week and all is well.
2. I wouldn’t kill Fisher on that 4th and 3. I believe him (he actually has all the facts in making his decision) about the range with wind conditions. Even if that isn’t true, what is wrong with seeing what you can do in a high pressure situation like you will face in the playoffs? That ball was inches off the fingers from being an amazing gut check that gives a mega boost to the team confidence.
Besides, Fisher is one of the greatest coaches in the NFL. Everyone deserves a mulligan, and I’m not sure this is even that bad. Of course, I’ve never been a fan of armchair QB’s re-evaluating the coaches in hindsight every week. Plenty of Colts fans do it to Dungy, too. Whatever. Two great coaches.

I'm not about to jump off the bandwagon
But my perception that the game yesterday seemed very much like the loss against the JETS, and not because we lost. it seemed like nothing was clicking.
I suspect the team came out and tried to mail it in. They felt that they had beaten the Texans so many times, already clinched the playoffs, etc. Heck, even Bulluck mentioned the slack attitude.
I don’t think they will show up with that attitude next Sunday.

I'll be honest...
…i’s difficult for me to cheer for the team when they keep the best personel on the sidelines. And here I’m talking about B. Jones and L. Hawkins vs. J. McCariens. That is actually hard to stomach.

yeah
you have to wonder what it is they think mccareins brings to the table that is so worthy of all this playing time and all these throws.

He is familiar...
with the offense. I guess that would be the only reason, but that is definitely not a good enough reason for this scrub to continually see the field.

PK said it's his run blocking.
Which makes since, but I can’t imagine why Collins would throw to him then

I would argue that you cannot lose a game because of poor run-blocking by your WRs.
However, we have now lost TWO because of WRs who cannot get open and drop balls.
