Houston Texans 13 Tennessee Titans 12: HUH?
I am eagerly waiting to see what Jeff Fisher has to say about the offense taking the field on 4th and 3 at the end of the game. I am not going to kill Fisher for it because he is a great coach and one bad decision doesn't change that. It is just hard to understand why he wouldn't send Rob Bironas out there with a shot to win the game from 49 yards out.
Overall the Titans played bad and didn't deserve to win. Kerry Collins was terrible. Justin McCareins is the worst receiver in the NFL. The defense only gave up 13 points, but elite defenses don't give up 207 yards to a receiver and over a 100 yards to a running back. Elite defense can get off the field when they know the other team is just running the ball to run out the clock. This defense is very good, but we really should stop comparing them to the best defenses of all-time. And who knows how long Albert Haynesworth is out.
End of the day the Titans are 12-2 and still control their own destiny for the #1 seed in the playoffs, but the postseason will be really short if they don't fix some of the problems we saw today.
Links and much more coverage in the morning.

Strained MCL
could be similar to Vince’s injury earlier in the year.

waiting in fear to hear about AH
the direction his knee went had to be mcl, but the question is tear or sprain. this is not a top tier team without him, esp w/ KVB shaky already.
our offense further confirmed my fears that kerry collins is inconsistent with his decision making and accuracy and that teams can shut down the run game by stacking the box. keep in mind, houston is not even a good defensive team.
justin mccareins should never play again, he is absolutely awful and has been since he came back here. don’t know why fisher can’t see it, but it’s getting ridiculous.

Season of broken Dreams?
I dont think so. I think big Al will be ok. He might miss the rest of the season. But, KVB and Big Al for sure get any extra week to heal all the way up. I just hope we will be fine.

also
i think we need to take this offense in a new direction how about actually spending money on a wid receiver but then again that is viewed as blasphemus

we just saw the beginning of an epic collapse
likely finish the season with 3 straight losses and then lose in the 1st round of the playoffs….

sprained mcl
is the guess so far but we’ll have to wait on MRI. He’ll have four weeks of recovery time before first playoff game – cross fingers.
Without Al Steelers may have a good shot at winning the #1 seed from us, having just beaten the Ravens. but we’ll see. I think we will match up well against the Steelers even with Al out.
Guys, ease up on the doom and gloom. The Texans are a good football team with a lot to play for – their first winning season EVER. Get it? EVER. They’ve won four in a row now, and if Chicago needs that last game of the season they have to play in Houston to make the playoffs, they’re in trouble.
Our offense played crappy. Hopefully they will shake it off and get it together. I would not be surprised if our offense does better against Pittsburgh, the 1st place defense in terms of yards in the league, than it did against the Texans, the 21st ranked in terms of yards. That doesn’t make sense on paper, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen on the field.

Prior to the game, some folks were claiming the Titans would lose this game...
I’m not sure why. Was it because of a let down after getting into the playoffs? Lack of respect for a team they had beaten so many times before? Even Fisher thought they would be able to score a touchdown, instead of going for a relatively sure lead. Now, it’s back on the Titans to win at home against the Steelers in order to clinch home field. I don’t know.

The strangely low spread was a clue
when a spread looks that wrong it’s usually because the people making the lines are smarter and better connected than you.

what they are really saying on al
it’s at least sprained, but an mri could easily show it’s torn. by saying it is “sprained” after examining it means they know it is screwed up bad, but can’t tell exactly how bad with out taking pictures.

Titans are still 12-2 folks, let's not panic quite just yet.
I understand that they can’t play like they did today and hope to beat the contenders come January, and losing big Al would be a huge hit, but let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Houston played tough today and made some big plays when in counted.
Jimmy says you can’t put this defense among the elite, but I strongly disagree. This defense has been able to make stops when given bad field position to work with an awful lot this year, and the way they keep teams out of the end zone is something you can compare to the elite defenses of the past. Sure, giving up 200 to Andre is nothing to be proud of, but that’s the only guy Schaub threw to all day. If you told me Andre would have 200 yards and a TD and the Texans would be held to 13, I would have taken it.
Time to double down and get ready for Steelers week. Enough with the doomsayers already, we haven’t even started the playoffs yet.

whats up with fisher not kicking the field goal
he must have been thinking that to much time was on the clock for them to come back and score. and why not throw a short pass if your going to gamble. collins was pretty off target all day what makes you think hes going to hit that one. dosnt make any sence. its going to be intersting what he has to say to explain himeslef for a lousy play call.
nother game like this from collins might as well put vince back in
by dentureboy on Dec 14, 2008 8:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
if you are
going to go for it on fourth, how bout a play action pass to the flat like the one hall scored on last week. a go route to our most unreliable receiver hardly seems like a good play call. that being said, if the throw was on target he would have scored.

Fisher
If Fisher didnt take the blame in the locker room for this loss he is truly an egomaniac. What a dumbass move for such a good coach. We will not make it to AFC title game with Kerry. Jeff and Vince better make up and get it together If they want any offense. Kerry is due a bad outing, but lets get real folks. You absolutely have to do what is best for the team to win at this time of the season. Vince was usually good when put on the spot before. Its going to have to change quick. Jeff blew it also for not letting Vince take some snaps. This is getting bad. Need to get head out of rear. Vickerson ill be trump card for loss of Al in playoffs. I am sorry to say, but after what Jeff showed us today, you can mail it in. Get a receiver in off season, plan on next year now. Also, Bironas nails 49 yards, big Al doesnt get hurt….. good job Jeff. Humble pie best served cold.

panic!
sky is falling! 12-2 team with #1/#2 playoff seed not acceptable! must dominate every game! qb must be accurate every game! coach must always make correct decision! argh! my beer is spilling!
if they lose their first playoff game by a spanking like SD gave then last year, i’ll spill some beer too, until then i’m going to try not to sound like a girl with a lost dollie…

I have no
problem with anything anyone wants to say about the Fisher decision… It was flat out stupid.
But fact is nobody gets more out of his players than Fish… Best coach in the NFL! He ’s entitled to make a mistake once in a while.
All this other mumbo jumbo is just Monday morning if this happens then that doesn’t is just BS. Albert could easily have gotten hurt on the next Texans drive after we kick the FG.
I think it would have been a good move to throw Vince in for a spark, get the win, and keep Kerry as the starter next week. But it didn’t happen, so stick with Kerry next week if he’s still ineffective then go to Vince. No kiss and make up shit, just go to Vince. Play football and win games.
This D is good enough to win without Albert… a championship… NO, a few more games… sure

i would not mind at all
seeing them play with VY package, but i’d prefer they try it out some before the playoffs start if they’re gonna try it.

See...
I would rather them not. I would rather them practice it like crazy, and not show it so teams cannot prepare for what we are going to do. Like Atl pulled out a play today that nobody has really run out of the wildcat, they should have saved that one for a desperate situation down the road when they’re gonna need it. Now a team has seen it on tape and will prepare for it down the road.

out of Bironas range ???
Jeff says in Post game that he felt 49 yards wasnt in his range. What a complete bonehead.

yeah
I do agree with that – but it’s consistent with Fisher and Titans organization. He never admits a mistake to the media. never. hopefully he realizes it was a mistake, though.

i felt we were going to lose when
i noticed kerry collins not putting it together in the 3rd quarter. if it weren’t for our awesome defense in the 2nd half we wouldn’t have been in this game. Fisher made a call on that field goal and he took a gamble. i wouldn’t exactly say that he lost us the game. if i were to put the blame against someone it would definately be at Kerry Collins and Justin Mac.
i didnt feel like everyone came to play in this one and hopefully everyone is on the same page next week against our biggest test yet. the steelers wont let many errant passes fall to the ground because they’re notorious for creating turnovers. the way to beat the steelers is to stop their run game and have a solid clutch kicker. i think fisher will look at kerry’s performance next week and if his performance does not improve from what its looked like over the last few weeks i think fisher will be forced to make a change… but who knows when you’re playing fisherball

When they decided to go for it on 4th down, I wasn't happy, but I didn't think it would be a disaster.
First off, I thought that with three time-outs, they’d get the ball back with another chance to kick a long FG if it came to it. And then, too, this is why you have LenDale White, no? He has been excellent in these short yardage situations all year. So the obvious play was either LDW up the gut or a play-action bootleg to a run/pass option on the outside. I figured that the odds on either of those working was probably 50/50. Which was okay given that the D was gassed from being on the field for 100 snaps at that point.
I have no clue at all why you run a post with your slowest and least consistent WR on 4th-and-3. THAT was completely idiotic.

is anyone else as disturbed about our inability to pick up a damn 2nd and short...
let alone 3rd and inches. this has been a lingering problem for the last couple years and i thought we turned the corner this year…but apparently not. who cares if everyone on the planet knows the sneek is coming? its better than a slow developing handoff most of the time.

Titans had two bad games so far
At the end of the preseason, I figured there would have been many more than that. But this team, with a crew of unheralded players, have put together a damn fine season. If Fisher pulls off the win over the Steelers next Sunday all this will be forgotten history. Must admit the Texans will no longer be the patsy of the division; and it’s amazing what has happened to the Jaguars.

The Texans looked a whole lot better than they ever had
I wish we had Andre Johnson. If we can score a no-kidding WR in free agency, that would be a godsend. Lock up the rest of this team. Pay Bironas and Haynesworth.
But the truth is, if we go all the way and win a Superbowl, this team will be picked over by the rest of the league. Anyone who isn’t locked down will be gone. And that goes for the coaching staff as well.
