Something to remember as our boys hit the road this Sunday:
Jeff Fisher is 50-2 when we have the lead at the beginning of the 4th quarter. That stat is only more impressive once we realize the kind of company comes with those results.
Here are the all-time winningest coaches with a 4th quarter lead:
Head Coach W - L - T %
1. Vince Lombardi 38-1-1 (.974%)
2. Jeff Fisher 50-2-0 (.962%)
3. John Madden 34-1-4 (.958%)
Coach Fish has taken a lot of shots over the years from Titans fans for being too conservative, especially late in games. Results like these serve to show the danger of taking anecdotal evidence as gospel.

I almost tried to look up what coach has the most ties in the modern era
because Madden’s 4 have to be right up there, I’d think…
Where I was raised 2 + 2 = 3rd and 6.
You have a link to that?
I counted 18 times a Jeff Fisher coached Houston/Tennessee Oiler/Titan team has had a 4th quarter lead at any point and lost the game.
I’m guessing there are some other qualifiers that you are missing, because I can’t believe somebody got this that wrong. I’ll give you 2 from 2005, and 2 from 2006:
insert "on the road"
about 2/3 down the page

It's closer, but I know what they did
They forgot he was the coach of the Houston Oilers from ’95 to ’96, and the Tennessee Oilers from ’97 to ’98. He had 3 such losses in those 4 years.
He’s only had 2 from ’99 on, when he was the coach of the Tennessee Titans. Still a very impressive record over the past 10 years.
The two game are the Colts game linked above, and this one against the Patriots:
That stat is in the Titan's media guide for Sunday's game
Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.
I got the set-up wrong here
the actual stat was Fisher’s teams’ record when the Titans lead AT THE START of the 4th quarter, not when they have the lead at any point. The post has been updated to reflect that.
Where I was raised 2 + 2 = 3rd and 6.

That still doesn't hold up.
mgrex03 linked three examples earlier of games that the Titans led going into the 4th and lost. Is it road games only?
I hate Music City Miracles!
Here they are:
I knew it was just missing qualifiers, and I figured the Titans Media person wouldn’t forget Fisher coached the Oilers as well.
I have seen this stat on TV at least 3 times this season alone.
I can’t believe it’s that far off.

While everyone debates Fisher's stats
I found it interesting that the percentages for Vince Lombardi AND John Madden are wrong. Unless I’m mistaken you divide the number of wins by the total games. Well a Tie technically counts as half a win. So, Lombardi would be 38.5/40 (38 wins + .5 of a win for the Tie / 38 + 1 + 1) = .963% and Madden would be 36/39 (34 wins + 2 wins for the 4 Ties / 34 + 1 + 4) = .923% … Where did they get those stats in the post?
I never double-checked it until now.
Lombardi’s appears to have been calculated by ignoring the tie altogether. 38/39=.974.
Madden’s, however, is not that way: 34/35=.971. I haven’t found a way to manipulate that record, 34-1-4, and come out with .958.
Here's the NFl stats nuance:
Tie games were not computed in winning percentage from 1920-1971. Since 1972, tie games have been computed in winning percentage counting as a half-win and half-loss.
Where I was raised 2 + 2 = 3rd and 6.

Here's the whole thing copied and pasted from the media guide:
MAINTAINING A ROAD LEAD
The Titans own a 50-2 road record in the Fisher era when the team has the lead going into the fourth quarter, which puts Fisher behind only Vince Lombardi for the best record of all-time.
All-time head coaches with the best ROAD records with a lead going into the fourth quarter (minimum 25 road games with lead going into fourth quarter):
Head Coach W – L – T Pct.
1. Vince Lombardi 38-1-1 .974
2. Jeff Fisher 50-2-0 .962
3. John Madden 34-1-4 .958
Note: Tie games were not computed in winning percentage from 1920-1971.
Since 1972, tie games have been computed in winning percentage counting
as a half-win and half-loss.
