Matt Cassel?

I saw this poll on ESPN.com that asked "Would you want your team to pursue Matt Cassel this offseason?". I say why not?  I wouldn't want them to get in some kind of bidding war, but I say make an offer. Kerry Collins is older and at the backside of his career, and Vince Young has questions still left to be answered. I don't want to upset anyone, but IF Matt Cassel continues to play well and making good decisions consistently I think you can't look and see what it would cost ya.

So I thought I would put the same poll here to see what everyone thought. I also added an extra option I felt need to be there.

What about Donovan McNabb?

thats the first thing i thought.....

i say put out what we can afford under the cap and see who wants to win a superbowl as opposed to getting paid…. i think vince’s career with the titans is over.

Chris Simms > Matt Cassel.

As for McNabb, I think he’s the wrong fit for the system.

With three decent QBs on the team, I think we’re okay for the forseeable future regardless of what happens. If they let KC go next year—and I still think that’s the most likely outcome—then you have Simms and Young going forward. If you keep KC next year, then presumably you would release either Simms OR Young, keeping KC until he retires in addition to a younger QB-of-the-future. IMHO, any combination of those guys is better than trying to “upgrade” with either Cassle or McNabb.

I would question what kind of success Cassel would have without the best WR-corps in all of pro-football, and I have a hard time seeing more upside in McNabb—at this point in his career—than I see in KC. I mean, KC isn’t a mobile QB by any means, but his arm still works, and that’s his main weapon. His age isn’t a problem yet.

If the Titans want to upgrade the team, they need to get a real WR. I mean, as bad as that Jets game was, it wouldn’t have been half of that if they’d had some people who could consistently catch and move the chains. Shit, I bet even the great Brett Favre would struggle if he had to throw to Justin Gage and company.

I agree

Whoever was filling in for Jim Rome yesterday asked if Cassell is just Billy Volek. I lost it.

It was Andrew Siciliano (sp?)

I like him better than Rome. I don’t think we need to look at either Cassell or McNabb. Both will want big contracts and I think we’ve got enough money devoted to that position for now. Now if someone were to be cut or traded then we could talk but I don’t see that happening. Also, I think Cassell is looking good in a system. I don’t think he’d work out here.

There's nothing wrong with being a system guy, but he'd be smart to stay in that system.

matt cassel is my favorite

not really, he would be awful in tennessee. i love him because he gives me an incredible amount of validation about tom brady. as i have mentioned, i currently live in the heart of pats country, and i have always been a tom brady hater. part of it is my affinity for peyton, and part of it is because:

BRADY HIMSELF IS A SYSTEM QUARTERBACK

this season has shown me that:

MATT CASSEL = TOM BRADY- incredibly lucky timing

as far as the titans are concerned, cassel shouldn’t even be looked at. his success this year is because of the preposterously good WR corps and the spread offense. needless to say, the titans couldn’t be much further away from both of those elements.

but i also see no reason to have faith in chris simms either. he played one 11 game season for tampa in 2005 during which he was mediocre at best and then proceed to suck majorly in their first round playoff game. he played a little in 2004 and 2006, when he was benched after sucking big time and hasn’t played since.

HOF QB = VY + Benching '08 + Starting '09

I still have faith in VY. This year is a good learning experience for him. I expect him to start next year and perform well.

sure hope so

dunno if they can keep Kerry if he knows that’s coming, though. Which is not a problem is Chris is decent at the backup job (can come in and have reasonable chance of keeping us in a game). If Kerry goes out to start at some other team, particularly one without such a good pass protecting o-line, I’m afraid he might be making a mistake.

In a scenario where we lost Kerry due to team commitment to start VY again, I wouldn’t be opposed to adding another veteran QB as a backup and keeping three. But the guys we are talking about here (McNabb and Cassel) aren’t going to be looking for backup roles.

In a scenario where team has decided VY is bust and they keep Kerry as starter and Chris as young guy, I would not be opposed to adding another young guy third-stringer in case Chris is not the shiznit, but again neither McNabb or Cassel would fit there. So unless we somehow lose BOTH vy and Kerry, I see no reason to go after either of these guys.

hmmm sorry

I guess in case where they lock in kerry as starter next year, we’d probably keep same three we have now. VY has one more year on contract yes? So he’d be our (very unhappy) 2nd or 3rd stringer next year in that scenario.

I'm starting to think that VY will be trade-bait.

nah

that would be buying high, and selling low. bad strategy. VY has never been less valuable than he is right now. i still think you have to give the guy another shot next season. i haven’t thought about it very hard, but off the top of my head, i really can’t think of a team that has any good reason to give up anything valuable for vince.

maybe he does get shopped, but if fisher gives up on the guy, who the hell is gonna want him? then he becomes a head case qb, who has been pretty much given up on by his team as ever being able to see the field, read a defense, or throw accurately after less than 2 full seasons of playing time. who wants that guy? maybe houston for nostalgia purposes, i dunno.

it’s already nothing short of amazing we are as good as we are now with zero contribution from our last 2 top ten picks, but you start entering lions/jets territory on bad drafting at that point. plus, we would all have to acknowledge that that twat merril hoge knows more than nothing about football, and i am damn sure not ready to do that.
