Handicapping the Rest of the 2008 Regular Season

As I was staring at our remaining schedule at my desk and counting the hours remaining till Sunday I began to realize just how winnable each of our remaining games actually are. With our Titans 8-1 v. the spread this year (because of 1 lousy point) I decided I would try to handicap the rest of the games to see just how good our chances actually are. Here is what I came up with.

Nov.16 @Jags +3

This one was pretty easy since Covers already did the work for me. I actually think this line is a little low. Granted they had a win last week it was against the lowly Detroit kitty cats. Not to mention the fact that Del Rio has caused that locker room to implode. I probably would push this line to +6 but either way. A win is a win.

Nov. 23 Jets +3

When B-B-B-Brett Favre and the Jets come to town on the 23rd the Titans will be ready with a secondary that feeds off poor decision making QBs. The Jets rushing attack isn't horrible but it isn't stellar either. Our D-line should have no trouble. The Jets D is decent but their front 4 won't match up with well with the Titans O-line.

Nov.27 @ Lions +10

The poor poor Lions. What goes better with turkey than gravy? The Titans throwing a roundhouse kick to the Lions. While this game has some potential to be a bit of a letdown game I just can't see us losing. The Lions are inept on both sides of the ball with the exception of Calvin Johnson. Boy did Millen make a mess of that franchise. Titans win this one in a walk.

Dec. 7 Browns +6

The Browns are another team with locker room issues. With Lewis and others calling out the "quitters" in the Thursday night fiasco against Denver. Don't get me wrong; Cleveland could be a decent team but walking into the Big Album is going to be a death wish for them. No figgy pudding for Big Albert this December. It will be Brady Quinn sandwiches all night. (insert your own sexual orientation joke here). This line should probably be higher than 6 but I'm taking the Vegas approach.

Dec. 14 @ Texans +3

To me this game will be as tough as the remaining two. The Texans are a decent team and as we saw early in the year they have a good rushing attack. Their passing attack is really where their bread and butter is though. They are currently ranked 5th in total ypg and 4th in passing ypg. Containing Slaton and Johnson is a task I'm sure the Titans D will be up to but it should be a good game to watch either way. The Texans D is 29th in points allowed per game. Smash and Dash should have a field day.

Dec. 21 Steelers Even

I realize they had a monumental collapse against the Colts on Sunday night football this week but I'm not yet ready to call them overrated. Their offense with Big Ben under center isn't the best but it certainly should be respected. Their D scares the bejesus out of me though. Currently ranked 1st in yards allowed, 1st in passing yards allowed, 2nd in rushing yards allowed, and 3 in points allowed. The Steel Curtain appears to be back in full swing. This will be a tough smash mouth football game. I reserve the right to change my Even money on this closer to the game but right now these two teams look pretty evenly matched.  The matchup to watch in this one will be Finnegan going against Hines Ward. Two chippy guys are bound to be entertaining.

Dec. 28 @ Colts +3

And finally we see our division rivals again. This week Fish announced he'd be playing every game no matter what happens. So I'm assuming that means we'll be playing starters in this one regardless of what happens the rest of the season. We've already seen what these guys were capable of once and our guys were more than up to the challenge. However, they will have Bob Sanders back for this game so that should add a little drama. I feel confident that KC can spread the ball around enough to keep the D from stacking the line and let Smash and Dash do their things.

Feel free to rip me to shreds for this. I reserve the right to change all of this at a moments notice due to injury, insecurity, or ignorance.

Where/when did Fisher say that

They’d play every game, no matter what?

I am very happy to hear that. It’s such an insult to the fans and to the sport in general when a team decides not to make an effort in week 17.

by BeansCarter on Nov 11, 2008 1:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Teams don't owe anything

to the fans or the sport itself in week 17. As a fan I would rather see guys sit in week 17 to be healthy for the playoffs.

Super Bowl or week 17 win? Tough choice..

I think it's not a good idea to take a week off

especially since we’d already be getting a full week off on the bye. I’d hate for them to get 2 weeks and then play a team coming off of a big win… didn’t work so well against the Ravens in 2000.

Completely disagree

Yes there is a risk of injury, but you are presenting it as if playing in week 17 prevents a SB appearance or win. In all my years of watching football, I can’t think of one instance where a week 17 injury affected a team’s playoff performance. It may have happened, sure, but it’s not a foregone conclusion that playing hard equals injury.

In my opinion, a team should never, under any circumstances give anything less than a 100% effort. And when they do, I feel cheated.

Besides, a hard played game in week 17 keeps the team focused. The Patriots played their hearts out last year in week 17, while the Colts played Sorgi and completely opened up the Titans to unfair criticism that they didn’t deserve to be in the playoffs.

Teams owe everything to the fans and it is very important to preserve the integrity of the sport.

I still want to find this quote from Fisher.

Well crap

I cannot find that article. I was thinking it was in one of August’s morning links or something from Paul K’s links but I couldn’t find it. I’ll dig a little more tonight when i get home. Fisher said something to the effect of we’re going to play our players every game……..

That was it DannoE

Thanks! I’m so used to not finding anything worth reading in MMQB anymore I just assumed it wasn’t there! heh

Here is the quote:
“2. Tennessee (9-0). So who’s going to beat the Titans now? The remaining sked: at Jacksonville, Jets, at Detroit, Cleveland, at Houston, Pittsburgh, at Indianapolis. Imagine if the Titans are 15-0 heading into Indianapolis. I don’t care if the Colts are in it, out of it or have a playoff seed wrapped up, Dungy will play his guys. As will Jeff Fisher. He told me after the game Sunday, "We’ll play our players’’ for 16 games. No rest for the Titans.”

It’s in the Fine Fifteen section if you want to look for yourself:

Beautiful, thanks

PK makes the point here that Dungy would play his starters if a perfect season was at stake… I don’t know what he’s basing this on, however, as there’s no quote, and no precedent. Unless Dungy actually says otherwise, I’m gonna assume that he would rest his guys if nothing Colts-related was at stake.

Fisher on the other hand was not answering the hypothetical about a perfect season. He’s just gonna play his guys for 16 games. Awesome. Because I’d love to beat the Colts in their house to wrap up the season. There is also a reasonable chance the Colts will be fighting for a wildcard spot, and we may have the opportunity to crush their post-season aspirations. That’s the only thing I can think of that would be more satisfying than beating the Colts in the playoffs; beating them in front of the home crowd to keep them out of the playoffs.

True true

They’re still pro players, but the competition is so fierce at that level that if you don’t do absolutely everything in your power to win against a team, you probably won’t win. And that means putting the best players on the field.

by BeansCarter on Nov 11, 2008 3:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow

You see PK’s got the Colts at #4? He’s got such a man-crush on Manning. It’s Madden and Favre-esque

Of the 11 teams ranked after them in the “fine fifteen”, 8 have a better record, and 4 have the same record. I wasn’t overly impressed by their win over the Steelers. Two tipped passes that Wayne was able to come down have nothing to do with anything other than luck. And the Steelers beat themselves with Big Ben’s performance. On top of that they just barely beat an overrated Brady-less Patriots team.

4. Indianapolis (5-4). Not too long ago, the Colts were coming off bad losses to Green Bay and Tennessee. They were 3-4. They were on the verge of … well, on the verge of nothing good. So they scratched and clawed and beat the Patriots 18-15.

They took advantage of two ridiculously fluky tipped balls by Ike Taylor that fell into Reggie Wayne’s hands, and Peyton Manning did the rest. A great, gallant win. Colts 24, Steelers 20, at the Ketchup Bottle.

Gotta love Peter King; he points out the Colts were ridiculously lucky , but still sees it fitting to rank them 4th.

The Colts need probably need to go 5-2 over the next 7 games to get a WC spot.

Can they get there? Maybe…

HOU @ IND – W – Shouldn’t be too hard to deal with these guys, though Rosenfels will be looking for redemption
IND @ SD – L – Ok, let’s give this one to the Chargers; Chargers can beat the Colts.
IND @ CLE – W – Browns did upset the Giants… but the Colts will most likely handle them
DET @ IND – W – Freebie
IND @ JAX – L – Jacksonville already beat them at Lucas Oil, they can definitely do it in Florida.

Which brings us to week #17… the Colts, at 9-6 will be looking for their 10th win and a playoff spot.

Does anyone else love this scenario as much as I do?

by BeansCarter on Nov 11, 2008 4:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

One beef:

The Chargers are trash. Utter trash. I know injuries are part of it, but tt’s like they woke up and realized that their coach is Norv Turner or something…

Oh I don't know...

Let’s just cast aside that tight victory over the Chiefs for a second.

They’re basically the same thing as the Colts. Chargers are 4-5, and so should be the Colts if it weren’t for the Rosenfels brainfart experiment. In fact, the Chargers should be 5-4, based on the disaster call by Hochuli that gave the Broncos that win in week 2.

The Chargers have a better win against the Patriots then the Colts do, and their close loss against Carolina in week 1 could have easily gone the other way.

Chargers beat the Colts last year with largely the same personnel, twice!

The game’s not a gimme, but the Chargers still hold the edge in my view.

My one and only argument for this thread

Im only going to say one thing because I know this will cause a huge “your a troll, GTFO” fiasco. If we got lucky on the 2 tipped passes, the Pittsburgh got lucky on the 2 on the money, should have been touchdown throws to Harrison, which he dropped. Simply put, the Colts made one or two more plays than the Steelers made and that normally is the difference between winning and losing in the NFL. Luck nothing, the Colts won that game because they made more plays the Steelers. Eat it.

No one's arguing that. Clearly the Colts were the better team--than the Steelers.

Actually...

I’ll argue that. The Steelers beat themselves. And Harrison is not half the receiver he used to be.

by BeansCarter on Nov 12, 2008 6:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That may be true, but that's all part of it.

The Steelers are a very good but flawed team. As good as Rothlesburger has been, they’re letting him make too many mistakes and getting away from what they’re good at—pounding the run and playing good defense. But that’s coaching. To me, that’s why they lost.

I'm just annoyed

That the Colts play like crap for several games, then they somehow manage to squeak out two unconvincing wins against good teams, and Peter King and every single Colts fan begins to fellate themselves over the resurgence of their team.

Some Colts fans are even suggesting the path to a Superbowl now…

What was so wrong with what he said?

Is he not correct that a Wild Card team won the Super Bowl last year?

Most of us know we have our work cut out for us to even get to the Playoffs, let alone getting any farther than that. We have played all 3 division leaders in consecutive weeks, beating 2 of them. People are excited, and looking forward. That’s what fans do.

by mgrex03 on Nov 12, 2008 10:39 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's just it

Colts are a borderline team this year, and the instant the team strings together two wins, people start thinking about the Lombardi trophy. You shouldn’t be dreaming about the SB when a playoff appearance is far from assured.

We’re 9-0 and everyone is looking for us to slip up. Everybody’s stuck in the old paradigm of Colts-Patriots-Steelers, blah blah blah. Got news for ya; it’s a brave new world, and the Titans are on top.

If you wanna cheer for a lottery win, be my guest, but I’ll be surprised if the Colts make it to the post-season. Like Fisher and his players, we try not to look past next week.

by BeansCarter on Nov 12, 2008 11:20 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It won't be a lottery win

While Colts fans may overstate their case for the playoffs, I think you are understating it. Others on here have stated they’d be surprised if the Colts don’t make it, so it isn’t an uncommon opinion. They’ve played the 2nd toughest schedule in league so far. And they have the third easiest the rest of the way, which doesn’t include what the Titans may or may not do Week 17, as most likely it won’t matter either way for the Titans.

As far as the old paradigm, the Patriots and Steelers are still leading their respective divisions. I obviously know the Titans are head and shoulders above everyone else in the AFC, and I’ve seen nobody argue to the contrary.

I’m cautiously optimistic about the Colt’s playoff chances. Anything can and has happened in the NFL this season. However, you can’t argue with how easy the Colt’s schedule looks from here on out. It obviously doesn’t guarantee wins, but I’d rather play the Bengals and Lions, instead of what, say, Baltimore or Jacksonville has to play.

Oh I know

You can read my thread above…

You need to circle San Diego, Jax, and Tennessee.

If you can win 2 out of those 3 games, you will likely make it. A loss to Houston this weekend would derail the train though.

by BeansCarter on Nov 12, 2008 12:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed on all counts

I think it is 2 guarantees, 2 should wins, 2 toss ups, and Tennessee.

I think 5-2 will make the playoffs (10-6 overall). We own the tie breaker over most teams, with the exception being Jacksonville. The Titans can help with them this week though, potentially putting them 2 games behind the Colts (if they beat Houston).

By the way, a win by the Colts this week will put them in a playoff position after this week, potentially even the 5 seed (if the Giants beat Baltimore). That’s not too bad.

by mgrex03 on Nov 12, 2008 12:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That would be quite a recovery.

‘Course the Titans started 1-4 a few years ago and then made it to the AFC Championship game, so it’s not like it’s never been done.

Didn't hurt us on Sunday

An INT each for Tim Jennings and Keiwan Ratliff. Obviously they are not at Jackson’s level, but they aren’t chopped liver.

Take a look at the Colt’s schedule. They play Sage Rosenfels, Philip Rivers, Brady Quinn, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Daunte Culpepper/Drew Stanton over the next 5 weeks. Name someone other than Rivers you’d want starting for you.

That is by no means a fact

Sure he looked good in the second half against Washington, but that doesn’t guarantee success the next week.

Manning looked great against the Ravens, then looked awful against the Packers. It happens to the best of them, and can certainly happen to a backup QB.

by mgrex03 on Nov 12, 2008 11:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They still had to be in position to make the play

Quarterbacks make bad throws all the time. There are times where they get lucky, and the defense wasn’t in position, drops the pass, etc.

And I agree Roethlisberger lost the game, and did not play well. However, I’d still take him over any of those guys, but that is just my opinion.

And another argument

If you look at the Colts…

In 2004, 2005, and 2007, the Colts rested their starters in week 17 because the outcome of the game would not affect their playoff seeding…

What happened those years?

2004, Colts get embarrassed by NE in the second round of the playoffs. (20-3)
2005, Colts lose to Pittsburgh in the first round of the playoffs. (21-18)
2007, Colts lose to San Diego in the first round of the playoffs (28-24)

Whole lot of good it did indi to rest its starters… I think there’s a lot to be said for focus, momentum, and routine. You take a week off, and your guys get complacent.

Now I know that it’s hard to establish a cause and effect relationship here, and Indianapolis, aside from their SB season are perennial playoff choke-artists, but I think it’s safe to say that mailing it in week 17 didn’t help them.

by BeansCarter on Nov 11, 2008 2:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

2 different arguments

It may be the best thing for the players to stay on their routine. If Fisher decides that is the case I am all of it. I don’t think they owe anything to the game (whatever that means) or the fans.

by BigW on Nov 11, 2008 2:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Fair enough

We can disagree on that point, but I’ll elaborate on the way I think about it.

Football is at the apex of all pro sports in North America. Each game that is played is far more meaningful than it is in other sports. The short regular season makes it such that every weekend feels like the playoffs. Every W is viewed as vitally important, until, you get to a situation where your own playoff seeding cannot be altered by the outcome of a game.

For reasons such as history and lore, even if a W is not needed by a team, the game is still a game between two pro teams, and should be taken seriously. Every genuine game has the potential to give the fans record-breaking stats, memorable plays and all-around great entertainment. With Sorgi under center, you cannot provide that; and it taints the record books.

The fans pay to see the best football possible between two pro football teams. When you basically throw the game, like the Colts did last year, you can affect the fate of other teams. The Browns, who for all intents and purposes had a greater right to be in the playoffs then we did, had to sit and watch as Jim Sorgi pissed away their playoff dreams. Despite the fact that the Titans benefited from that, I don’t ever want us to win like that, against a team that isn’t trying.

The point is; the Titans deserved a fair fight, and the Browns did not deserve to have their fate determined by a Colts team that wasn’t trying to win. It’s just not the way it’s supposed to be. Everyone should try their hardest, and let the dust settle where it may.

The game itself, the “institution” that football is, deserves better.

by BeansCarter on Nov 11, 2008 3:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

To a point I agree with that Beans

But what about the team that takes a safety to end the game rather than taking a chance on giving up a TD. Isn’t that basically the same thing? Kneeling down? Etc?

Don’t get me wrong I HATE watching throwaway games but at the same time…. It’s a double-edged sword.

The PAIN TRAIN is comin baby!

by BigW on Nov 11, 2008 3:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it's the same concept

Because you’re playing to win the game, in your example. A conservative strategy designed to preserve a win is not the same thing as not giving a shit whether you win or lose and mailing it in with your backups.

by BeansCarter on Nov 11, 2008 3:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And if the Browns won 11 games they

would have been in the playoffs. They “pissed” away their own dreams by not beating the Bengals in week 16. No team owes anything to any other team.

Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.

by Jimmy on Nov 11, 2008 3:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree

The Colts didn’t owe the Browns or any other team anything but they do owe the fans and they owe the sport itself. Obviously this is where we disagree.

I don’t like the fact that only 9 of our wins were against real competition while 10 of the Browns wins were against real competition last year. Makes me unsure of whether we ever deserved to be in the playoffs. I don’t want any freebies from anyone.

Last year was not our decision

we can only beat whomever is in front of us…. that being said, say the Colts have to win to get in and we’re already a lock: wouldn’t it get the Colts hacked off if we didn’t return the favor this year!

Fisher is 50-50

as to whether he is cutthroat. Some guys he is that way toward and others he is not. Knowing he doesn’t have to face Dungy again after this season might play into that decision as well. Keep in mind the Colts weren’t trying to keep a perfect season in tact last year when they faced us either.

Personally

If we end up in the same situation with rolls reversed, I’d feel better about it if we sat most of our starters too. Yeah yeah, I know all the counter arguments and they’re good ones. nevertheless. still feels like a dick move to me if we have everything locked up (home field etc) and still try our hardest to knock the colts out of a wildcard slot.

Now, if it was New England, OK. Go dick move all the way in that case.

I'm more concerned with VY tripping over his bottom lip

Chris Simms is on the sideline Sunday greeting KC each time he comes off the field and the couple of times I saw VY he was over there with his hood up looking broodish. Granted those were only snapshots in time but still……….

Give me a break

Fisher has had nothing but praise for VY after “the episode.” You’re trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

I’d also add that in a few other of these “snapshots”, he’s been fired up and encouraging his teammates.

And, it is generally the third string quarterback by the coach on the sidelines and “holding the clipboard.” Vince’s distance isn’t all that unusual. While he may not be right next to coach, he’s clearly miked up and listening to everything going on between Dinger and Kerry…

Let's just get this on the record

Chris Simms is Awful … if i had to look him up in the dictionary i would reference the D section under the word : Dogsh*t

I WOULD NOT BE SUPPRISED AT ALL

TO SEE VC PLAY 3 QTRS WEEK 17. THERE WOULD BE NOTHING TO LOOSE… BUT THERE WOULD BE IF KC GOT HURT.

That's a good point too

And from a strategic point of view, it may make sense to put VY in. Not solely motivated by the desire to keep KC healthy though; If something happens to KC in the playoffs, it would be good to have VY with some recent game experience. And you would want Vince in there with the ones, not the backups.

whoa whoa whoa people!

aren’t we looking ahead, just a little bit? we’ve got a tough game against a divisional opponent in a hostile stadium. jacksonville always plays us tough, no matter who’s ahead or behind in the win loss column. i’m already sick and tired of this “undefeated” talk. look where it got the pats last year. i think a loss is what this team needs, to build some resolve and take the pressure off us psychologically . we’re looking to make a playoff run this year. we got our division cinched (pretty much), so lets worry now about home field advantage. nothing else.

talk about being undefeated

is not central to this discussion; it only got brought up in reference to Peter King’s article.

Disagree Vancouver

Never hope for a loss. All indications suggest that this team is focused and not buying into any of the hype.

yeah well...

we thought we were going to roll right over the Lions too.
we beat them on a late field goal, after a quesionable pass interference call.
don’t forget these words, “trap game”. cause I would like to see the Lions go winless this year

We'll worry about the Lions in 3 weeks when we get to them.

And when we get to them we’ll be ready, and we’ll probably stomp them.

The “trap game” mentaility applies to teams not coached by Jeff Fisher.

I thought about trying to do some handicapping before.

I tried to take a version of the P(Wins) formula and adjust it for strength of schedule (not this year). Anyway, it always ended up coming out as a wash for me over any more than about six games. This year it seems like there are a few really, really bad teams, so maybe that’s not as true anymore, but that’s what I found.

im shocked by the titans/jags line

everywhere i have looked its basically titans -3, a couple titans -2.5 (i gladly took a little action on that line). -3 is kinda insulting even if it is a road game. maybe the reason the titans are 8-1 ATS is because people still aren’t sold on them

by hal41605 on Nov 12, 2008 2:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's the correct line

Because it’s a divisional opponent on the road. These coaches know each other very well. We’re far from being guaranteed the win. If we were in Nashville the line would probably be -7
