Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Dreams Of Making Flapjacks In Perfectville Edition
Don't look for the Titans to make a trade for a WR before the fast approaching deadline... why I didn't copy and paste this from the same reports during the preseason, I have no idea.
The indefatigable gramesy712 passes along this great read, in which SI's Don Banks sizes up our chances of going undefeated. Premature I know, but awesome none the less. Here's the meat and potatoes:
If the Titans do get to 8-0 at the season's midpoint, their second half starts off with challenging games at Chicago in Week 10 and at Jacksonville in Week 11. Things get a bit easier for a while after that -- Jets at home, Lions on the road, Browns at home, Texans on the road -- but Tennessee will have to earn it in Weeks 16-17, drawing Pittsburgh at home and a road trip to Indy in its final two games.
Cortland Finnegan may not get a ton more picks this season because teams are too scared of his beastly, early Ronnie Lott-like play to throw at him. My proposal to deal with this? Get Cort some fake dreads and Reynaldo Hill's jersey he'll get 90 INTs because teams love to pick on Hill.
In 'Ohh so that's why!' news, LenDale's paltry three carries last Sunday was due to a shoulder injury. It's tough to tell if the injury will be a lingering problem, but they need to start activating Chris Henry if it's going to limit LenDale's carries.
Matt Snyder of AOL Fanhouse goes over the roughing the passer call that helped our 4th quarter comeback, and decides that all defenders should be allowed to keep going, even though whistles were being blown like crazy, and hit our QB in the head.
Anybody have any idea why the Titans brought in at least 8 DBs to try-out yesterday?
5 things we need to know going into the bye-week. No.1 should be learn the difference between a hand signal that says 0-5 and one that says 5-0.
The Titans still rank second in Football Outsiders' Defensive Value Over Average (DVOA) ratings, which apparently does not factor in being perfect as a criterion. What I found interesting were the Defense vs. Types of Receivers rankings on the same page: we're the no.2 defense against teams' #1 and #2 guys, but ,middle of the pack against other receivers. That says a lot about how great Finnegan and Harper have played so far this year.
Man do BigW and I love a good Kissing Suzy Kolber piece on the Titans... I pray one day they do a piece on us that rivals the Sexy Rexy series (which still makes me cry I laugh so hard everytime I go back and read it).

A few notes...
1. There is no way the Titans will go 16-0, and I couldn’t care less about it.
2. I’ll take LenDale with a bad shoulder over Chris Henry. I think Ganther would do better at spelling White and Henry would do better at filling Johnson’s role. But both are a significant downgrade from the starters.
3. Re: Matt Snyder. It was 3rd-and-10. With a False Start, it would have been 3rd-and-15. That’s not necessarily the end of the game. Hard, yes. But not impossible. Besides which, both teams benefited from those types of calls all game—including on both of Baltimore’s scoring drives—and indeed, what else can you expect in a game where fights are common? Hell, look at KVB’s 15-yarder from last weekend for hitting a QB “where the rulebook tells me to hit the quarterback.” Had the Vikes come back and won, we’d be arguing about whether THAT penalty cost the Titans a game! But of course, that didn’t stop the Titans from winning because TN continued to make plays. End of story.
4. The Titans have been trying out potential reserve players all offseason on Tuesdays. PFT should do a modicum of research on it; the Tennessean has already had two articles on the phenomenon. But then again, I suppose the folk at PFT would probably consider looking at potential reserve players as “manipulating the roster.”
5. Finally, IMHO the Titans DESERVE to be second in Defensive DVOA. That Ravens’ defense is AWESOME.

Proving once again that Florio is a moron. Fisher basically just laughed off the manipulating the roster thing last night on his show. When it comes to the NFL rules, I think I will trust what Fisher knows over Floritool.

I was never concerned.
The Titans weren’t the only team to do a roster swap like that over the weekend and then talk about it publicly. Obviously no one cares. And I doubt Florio has the correct rules interpretation anyway.
BTW, I think the guys at FO have outsmarted themselves this year. Because they have the Ravens as the second best team in football and the Eagles as the third best team in football, and neither of those teams is better than .500. Moreover, despite having a win over FO’s 2nd best team in football, FO still says that the Titans haven’t played anybody.

If what the Boom King did was a foul
Then what Suggs did is a foul.
Both hit the quarterback in the head.
Yeah, I know. Somebody had to do it……….

It's the truth though
the only thing the ref could be chided for was calling it roughing the passer and not a personal foul.
Even in a dead-ball situation you can’t do something the league has said it’s going to crack-down on then complain when you get popped for it.

At worst, it was offsetting penalties, meaning 3rd-and-10 all over again.
Granted, that’s not great, but it’s not a calamity.

KVB's hit to Gus Frerotte...
it’s a helmet to “helmet” hit that resulted in a “dead ball” situation.
The strange thing about it is that KVB is the one who is out right now with a groin injury.

They really don't like how we win games, despite the fact that it's a proven system
at least it is when Fisher is at the helm…

I'm just tired of the double-speak.
Either we haven’t played anybody, or we have. I mean, first the Jags are the next best thing. Then they lose to the Titans, and so now the Vikings are the next best thing. But then they lose to the Titans, and so all of a sudden Baltimore is the next best thing. But then even THEY lose to the Titans, and so now, at 5-0, the Titans haven’t played anybody. And we already know that KC isn’t a quality opponent. So who is? Anybody?
Meanwhile, the Vikes beat the Saints, and all of a sudden, they’re the next best thing again. And next weekend, if the Ravens demolish the Colts, then THEY will be the next best thing again.
To tell you the truth, I think the Ravens really are the next best thing. That’s a fantastic team, and I fully expect them to go on a tear later in the season. I think they’re gonna fool around and win that division.

You're right about Baltimore though...
they’re a much, much better team than I expected. That defense will put a few guys into therapy this year.

No way?
What do you mean no way we’ll go 16-0? I think there’s definitely a way. We stomp a mudhole in all of our opponents from here till the end of the year.
Now I agree it’s improbable. Even if we did win all our games and go 15-0, I think Fisher would rest our starters.
I wouldn’t say there’s no way it happens. And, even tho I don’t really care, I think it would be hilarious if the Titans went 19-0 after the Pats failed to do it last year. The talking heads would crap themselves since they hate us so much.

16-0 Aint' Happening
As awesome as it would be, I don’t see a 16-0 season from this team being possible. We play in a tough division, and have some tough non-divisional games. Let’s just hope we stay on top of the AFC South and that our guys stay healthy. An injury to Haynesworth or CJ on offense would be devestating to this team and we have been plauged with injuries in the past. There is still a long road ahead, let’s take it one game at a time.
And secondly, the piece KSK did on the Titans was great, but nothing will ever amount to the hilarious-ness of the Sexy Rexy stuff they did a couple years back. F**k it! I’m Going Deep!

I'm already
required to crap myself if they hit 7-0. I’m not going to put anything additional on the line for 16-0.

KSK
If challenge anyone to find something funnier than when KSK makes fun of Hines Ward’s accent and Big Ben’s stupidity. Some of the funniest back and forth in history!

If we got to 15-0
We’d rest our starters (on the road, at Indy) and most likely lose the game, like Indy did with us last year.

Tough Call
On who to cheer for in the Bears/Titans game. I guess both, but probably the Titans based on the fact that I think they are true Superbowl Contendors this year (at least they have looked that way so far). The Bears should make the playoffs, and they DO have all the pieces they had when they went on their Superbowl run two years ago, but I don’t know if I see them going all the way, at least not this year. It’s a tough dilemma. The last time I remember watching a Bears/Titans game, I watched it live and in person at Vanderbilt Stadium and it was probably the worst football game I’ve ever had to lay eyes on. I guess that week is a win-win for me.
And I think the game against Pittsburgh is going to have a lot of merit at the end of the season, both teams will be, or at least SHOULD BE playoff contendors.
