New Blog: Backing the Pack for NC State Fans!

Ask Acme Packing Company (Week 9)

Hey there, Titans fans. I watched your big win last night and, I must admit, I was quite impressed. You couldn't really run and yet you still won in a moderately dominating fashion. I hope that's not the case on Sunday. Also, I'm sure you'll be able to run against our weak-ass Run D. Now, I'm sure passing will be a little different against Woodson/Harris... I'm sure you're bubbling over with questions about the Packers, (actually, I have no idea,) and I'd be more than happy to answer them. Ask away.

I'm going to add a poll, just to (Justin) gauge how you think the game will play out on Sunday.

See, I can make Titans jokes, no matter how lame they are.

Poll
How concerned are you about the Packers game?
Terrified. Whenever I think of Woodson, Rodgers, or Jennings, I have a seizure.

Nervous. I really don't know how good the Titans are, and the Packers seem pretty talented.

Cautious. The Titans are the better team, but we could screw it up.

Not at all worried. White/Johnson will stomp over you, and our D will dominate.

In a recent poll @ APC...

70% of us said that we were “moving on” from the whole Favre thing. So much for the stereotype that we Packers fans are obsessed with Favre… Of course it interests us, but we try to focus on those who are actually on the team. I feel a little betrayed by Favre, but am moving on.

Also, I just read up on the little feud you guys are having with Stampede Blue and I just wanted to say that we don’t want that at APC. We’re (mostly) nice guys, and are interested in the game – not any of the silly cyber feuds that, too often, go along with it. We wish you nothing but the best and want no animosity.

You won’t find anyone @ APC doing spiteful after-game posts.

And, finally, to answer your question. No, you cannot.

I think you'll find that at MCM

You’ll be treated in precisely the same way you treat us.

There are posters on Stampede Blue and Battle Red Blog who invite and deserve taunting. Many people here let it slide. I don’t. Interestingly enough, the Jacksonville Jaguars fans are pretty laid back. It must be the Florida sun…

Good luck this weekend. IMHO, you are the greatest challenge we’ve yet to face this year. Looking forward to a good game, and happy we’re not doing this at Lambeau.

four4foxboro or something. He was a complete jerk. That didn’t go well.

I disagree.

I really enjoy Battle Red. And I can understand why those guys have a beef with The Team that Left Them and Found Greater Success.

I had to go with answer 5. My biggest worry is

that we are coming off a short week while the Pack is coming off a bye. As big as the game was last night we could have a game where we are not at our best and that would certainly work in your favor.

But I do have a question. How is Rodgers doing against a hard pass rush? Does he get happy feet if he gets hit a couple times?

by DZone on Oct 28, 2008 4:49 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good pocket presence

He’s pretty good at moving around the pocket, he has some mobility, and is pretty good at throwing on the run. But usually when he’s on the run, he’s getting ready to throw it away. The Packers had no fear of playing with max protection, keeping a running back and tight end in to block. If you are still without KVB and only rushing four, he might not face that much pressure. Whether anyone can actually get open is another matter.

by Brandon on Oct 28, 2008 11:36 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How's your O-Line?

The Titans don’t really blitz very often, relying on their defensive line to get pressure on the quarterback. This works best, of course, when the opponent’s offensive line isn’t very good (see Kansas City, week 7, when the Titans put not 1, but 2, QBs out for the year).

So, how is your O-Line at stopping the rush?

by hartley on Oct 28, 2008 4:56 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good, Bad, Ugly

It’s been ugly at time with LT Chad Clifton struggling with a bad hamstring and C Scott Wells battling a bad back. Hey look at all the former Vols! But both are now healthy and near 100%. They looked very good against Indianapolis before the bye week, although see above for the Packers love of playing max protection, so they’ve been good lately. The veteran tackles are good at handling the ends, but the interior lineman have struggled against active defensive tackles (cue Haynesworth’s theme music…)

The bad is the run blocking, but it’s getting better. Still it’s taken Ryan Grant over 30 carries to rush for over 90 yards against bad run defenses like Seattle and Indianapolis.

DZone: Rodgers is slippery. That being said, he has been sacked 13 times this year (7 games). But we can deconstruct those numbers. Dallas, Tampa and Atlanta have good pass-rushes and our O-Line was depleted at the time. Those games account for 10/13 of the sacks. Otherwise, we’ve given up 3 sacks in four games, with no sacks in two of those. Our O-line is finally healthy, and allowed no sacks last week against a good Indy pass rush. You did the same thing. Rodgers is doing OK, and getting better against the pass rush. As far as I know, he does not get happy feet.

Hartley: At the moment, they’re pretty good. This is due to improving health and skill We’ve got Clifton and Tauscher, (two above average tackles,) Spitz/Colledge/Sitton/Barbe/Moll rotating at Guard (a solid group of young guys who are fast improving, and Scott Wells at center. Wells is good, but recovering from a back injury. As a unit, and when healthy, they’re pretty good, but not as good as your line. I expect the Titans to get some sacks.

Hello

How bad are you guys missing Cullen Jenkins, or are you? I loved watching him, thought he is extremely underrated, always playing hard.

by RhiNo6705 on Oct 28, 2008 8:17 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Where have you gone Cullen?

Cullen Jenkins was having a great 2008, after struggling through a mediocre 2007 as he battled minor injuries. He’s been out for the year after he tore a muscle in the game at Tampa. He was the only defensive tackle who provided an inside pass rush on passing downs, while playing great at end on early downs. He was having a Justin Tuck-type season. The pass rush has suffered without him. But surprisingly the pass defense hasn’t lost much without him because the secondary is having such a great year.

what things

do you expect green bay to be good at vs. the titans? where do you expect problems?

by hal41605 on Oct 28, 2008 10:28 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

More problems than advantages

The Packers don’t match up well against the Titans. The Packers pass defense has been lights out, although they aren’t as dominant at stopping opposing tight ends. The Packers run defense has been a sieve. A big wrinkle is that the Packers play man-on-man, they get up on the line and in the receivers’ faces. No cover-2, no zone. The problem is that the aggressive style leads to a lot of penalties.

The Packers have a solid pass offense, WR Greg Jennings is arguably the best receiver in the NFL in 2008, but your secondary was pretty solid against Indianapolis and they have a bunch of good receivers too. The Packers can’t run the ball against anybody, so I don’t except them to have a lot of success with that at Tennessee.

by Brandon on Oct 28, 2008 11:57 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I voted for "Nervous" but for the opposite reason.

I think the Titans are pretty talented, but I have no idea how good the Packers are even though I saw them lay the wood to Indy pretty convincingly. So they might be VERY good. If this game was at Lambeau I’d be actively concerned/waiting for the first loss of the season.

Question: Okay, so you said that the Packers are a mostly pass-first team. How do they play it? Is it a possession passing game, or strictly air-it-out, or a mix?

Is Justin Harrell playing?

I honestly thought he was going to be a force coming out of college, and I know the Packers caught a lot of grief for drafting him. Is he worth a darn?

Does Peter King still know that the Packers are in Green Bay with Favre in New York?

Whole Batch of Answers...

DannoE #1: It’s mostly short hooks and slants. Green Bay receivers excel at getting yards after the catch, so Rodgers will throw it maybe 7 or 6 yards, and the Driver or Jennings will evade a defender and dive for the first down. That being said, Rodgers does air it out to Jennings 2 or 3 times a game and will have the occasional 15 or 20-yarder as well. You have to watch out for the deep bombs to Jennings, they usually work and go for 45 yards or more. There’s some real chemistry there. We also run a lot of RB/WR screens, (again, YAC)
DannoE # 2: Jordy Nelson, WR. Nick Collins, S. Tramon Williams, CB. This is, of course, ignoring Woodson/Harris/Hawk/Rodgers/Jennings, who you probably already know. Nelson has been a solid 3rd WR as a rookie, and has really nice hands. Collins a 4 INT’s already and is emerging as an elite safety. Tramon has filled in for Al Harris beautifully, he has 3 INT’s and has proven himself a good 2nd CB, to Woodson. With him, we have 3 well above average corners, which is great.
Gramsey # 1: Harrell has not played this year, yet. He is still recovering from injury. No one really knows how good he is, some are willing to throw him into the “bust” bin already, but not me. He has shown flashes of brilliance, and with Jolly (DT) being endicted on federal charges, we need him. He might play this week.
Gramsey # 2: Probably not.

Another question.

I’m going to phrase it a specific way because I don’t want to make it a referendum on any particular player’s ability. I want to make it about running styles vs. the GB defense. So:

Who would present the bigger challenge to the GB defense: Willie Parker or Jerome Bettis?

by DannoE on Oct 29, 2008 10:24 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Subtle indeed..

Jerome Bettis. I say this because our D-line is somewhat undersized and a big bruising back like White, I mean, cough, Bettis, could run through them. A Wille Parker would certainly have success, but our defense is very quick in pursuit.

Thanks for the consideration, guys.

My question: what can we expect from Ryan Grant? I know that he finally broke through with the stats in the Colts game, and he’s certainly had a few awesome Edwin Moses-style highlights so far this year, but it still seems that he’s off (certainly in comparison to the beast that he was down the stretch last year). Even in the Indy game, despite his bottom-line success, he only averaged 3.4 yards/rush. Is there still a lingering issue with his hamstring, is it just an issue of getting into a rhythm with the rest of the offense, or is there something larger looming out there? SUBQUESTION: What’s your prediction on how he’ll perform vs. the Titans? (Full disclosure: I have Ryan Grant on my fantasy team, and one of those questions may have had non-football-purist motives…)

by Knox the Fox on Oct 29, 2008 3:15 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is a tricky one...

Although you predicted most of my answer in your question. Grant is not yet fully back. He has has 83, 90 and 105 yards rushing in the last three weeks after an extremely slow start. This is good. However, he has, as you pointed out, done that on a very high number of carries. I think his hammy is fine, but he does need to get into rhythm with the offense. I expect 50-100 yards and maybe a TD from him this week. Your Run D is pretty good, but the O-line is really gelling and Grant is maybe about 2 weeks from being what he was last year. Don’t drop him from your team, and maybe start him, depending on who your other RB’s are.

the titans

should just give up on the WRs entirely for this game. honestly i’d love to see dinger send the wide outs on go patterns every pass play, just so the heisman stealer and harris will be cleared out for the te’s and rb’s to make all the catches. if our wide receivers can’t get separation on average defenses, gb will have them blanketed. might as well have woody and harris doing wind sprints. trying to throw to receivers who aren’t getting separation is a recipe for int’s and the stats show the only defense better than us at this are our opponents next week.

Yeah, that makes me nervous, too.

You can only hope that the Packers will try to blitz Collins—which would be stupid IMHO—or that the Titans will have success running the ball. Even their safetly Bigby is a good player. Like it or not, I think the Titans are going to have to run right at the Packers and hope for the best. Maybe this will finally be LenDale’s break-out game? Regardless, we’ll probably also see a good number of throws to Alge Crumpler. He, at least, is a big guy who can push people around in the middle.

If this is a high-scoring game, then I doubt the Titans will win. But I’m not at all sure that it will be. I mean, throwing at Cortland Finnegan hasn’t exactly been a career-builder lately. In fact, I can’t even remember the last time anyone tried that consistently, but I’m pretty sure that Cort came down with the ball about as often as the receiver did. I predict he takes the INT lead this Sunday. I don’t know if the Titans will win this game, but I do think Finnegan will have a big day personally.

green bay's secondary

is a completely different beast. 13 int’s as a unit is flat out dangerous. if there is anything that will kill these titans it’s turnovers, especially when gb returns so many for scores. with GB the question isn’t “can we pick up yards and 1st downs passing?” it’s “can we avoid watching the ball go the other way in a defender’s hands?”

by hal41605 on Oct 31, 2008 8:49 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Questions

How is backup Guard Allen Barbre? Does he project as a future starter?

How is LS Brett Goode? Does it look as if he will keep the job next year?

The Colts shut down the Titans run game by running a 4-4-3, but the secondary didn’t hold up, with a better secondary than the Colts, could you see the Packers employing a 4-4-3 in this game to try to stop the run game?
