Solid win! Taking it to the Colts and their fans.
As some of you have likely noticed, the posts over at Stampede Blue have gotten quite adversarial as of late. In fact, somebody over there has been deleting some of my posts; I suppose the frustration of their season is starting to get to them, and as a result they have resorted to censorship. After the jump, you will find my post in response to http://www.stampedeblue.com/2008/10/23/641118/i-m-going-to-enjoy-watchin. I am also posting it here, so my fellow Titans fans can enjoy it. I assume that someone will delete it at Stampede Blue.
We go back and forth, we trash talk, we do many things on these blogs that, for the most part is nothing more than cheering on your team. Rivalries are fun; but they are not very fun when blog writers make ad hominem attacks on our players or our fans.
In fact, one of the administrators at StampedeBlue, BigBlueShoe, obviously takes great pleasure in ripping apart and verbally assaulting our players. Usually, the blog admins tend to rise above these low-grade tactics.
I invite you, fellow Titans fans, to not take this idly. Let us not revel only in being 7-0, let's defend our players and our team; as much as it feels great to win, it feels almost just as good to shut up these arrogant fans who had the audacity to disrespect our team and insult our players.
You all remember ole LenDale White, don't you?
Yup, I do.
The fat, sack of sh*t running back who is now all full of himself after he rushed for 149 yards against the friggin' Chiefs; yeah, that guy.
Well, calling someone a fat sack of sh*t is never a classy thing to do, but the bar is set pretty low around StampedeBlue, anyways. Ok, good, now we have positively established his identity. Thanks for clarifying which Lendale White you were referring to.
This is the same LenDale White who has, for the most part, been totally and completely stoned by the Colts defense the last few years.
Yup, for the most part he has. Though I must admit, his 2 touchdowns last night does compensate for his 1.3 YPC. What do you think?
Of course, the Colts are not going to need bulletin board material to beat the snot out of the Titans.
Correct - they would actually need a time machine and a better football team.
...the Colts are going to demolish them on Monday Night. This is not a game where the Colts are like Golly Gee, we really hope we can play with these guys. The Colts are coming into this game thinking that they will not only win, they will crush the Titans.
Sometimes it's not enough to just think you're going to crush your opponent. In reality, you often need to outplay them.
... LenDale White (who is still a fat, lazy prick who likes to run his mouth)
BBS, I am not sure if you are either fat or lazy, but are you sure you are not projecting here?

“But, last night, the Colts were not able to take advantage of an anemic Titans offense, which was completely shut down by a Colts defense that was supposed to "not be very good.”"

Re:

Garbage. Anyone who takes that position and watched the game last night is completely ignorant. Great teams find a way to win, in spite of adversity. We were without our Pro Bowl DE and his backup, but still found a way to dominate the LOS when it mattered in key 4th down situations. And, while Kerry didn’t put up monster numbers, the stat line doesn’t tell half of the story. The Colts loaded the box and, for much of the first half, had our number. Kerry and the offense dug deep and made the short passing game work. This team has the guts, heart and talent to go the distance.
As a side note (gotta get in my VY homer comment), did anyone else notice Vince fired up on the sidelines? First on the great knockdown against Reggie Wayne, and again on Lendale’s TD. I hope Vince is paying attention, because he can learn a lot from Kerry this year.

Shake'n'bake...
you left out part of that post…
After congratulating the team on putting up 21 points against us, I singled out one particular poster, coltsfanawalt, who, last week called me a jerk (I assume it was him since he has come after me repeatedly) and announced that he expected to hear from me after the loss. Well, as forecasted, it was my pleasure to deliver a personal message. But I did in fact talk about football, and I did acknowledge that the Colts played a surprisingly good game against a superior team. And I’ll reiterate my sentiment; Colts fans should be proud of the fact that they were able to hang in with us for almost 3 quarters.
Your “re-quote” should have read…
And to coltsfanawalt, I have one particular message,
I hope this defeat was as painful for you as it was delicious for me. Not sure what you’ll be doing in January, but I’m pretty sure it won’t involve watching a lot of Colts football.
Shake’n’bake – When BBS calls our running back a fat sack of sh*t, you might want to delete his posts too (based on your rationale). Because, clearly he is doing very little more that instigating the Titans fan base. I didn’t like BBS’ post, and I didn’t like being called a jerk by some passive-aggressive, self-righteous, whiny poster who has made it his business to judge my character. I also don’t like Titans fans being told to f*ck off by King Richard, but for some reason, you tolerate that too…
I will defend myself, and I will rub salt in wounds of fans who either offend me, Titans fans in general, or whose trash-talking crosses a very-easy-to-identify line, especially after your guys talk smack about how your cherished Colts will crush our Titans.
What would you have me do, “assume the position”, as captioned in BBS photo of Lendale in a ready stance? Do you think it’s appropriate to insinuate that Lendale White bent forward means that he is about to get sodomized?

Well then...
you’re just a big fat pussy. A giant, sloppy, soppy, pussy. I simply cannot understand how your policy is the least bit justifiable. If I were you, I’d have a real problem looking at myself in the mirror every morning, knowing that I deleted a fairly harmless taunt just because my team lost. Your deletion of those kinds of posts is sour grapes and nothing more, any attempt to paint it as unacceptable antagonization is, frankly, unbelievable. That is to say: I don’t believe you.
It reflects a fairly naive view of the internet as well as an overimportant sense of self. There is no utility in silencing the views of fans, READERS OF THIS NETWORK BY THE WAY, that you happen to find disagreeable but that otherwise don’t clearly violate any of the typical rules of SB Nation. If your defense is that they violate some particular rule of Stampede Blue, my response is, obviously: Those rules don’t make much sense. Treating readers like that is not a good idea. If I had contributors deleting, for instance, things Terry wrote just because I thought he was delusional, and he is, and he provoked us after a loss, which he probably has, then I’d do something about them… the contributors, not the alleged antagonizer.
What is it we’re doing here except soliciting responses from internet users? How can that goal be concurrent with a policy of deleting merely disagreeable text? This is ridiculous.
by Skin Patrol on Oct 28, 2008 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Another by the way...
what about the shared responsibilities our websites have? If one of your regular readers came to my site and started trashing my team, I’d have a responsibility to Stampede Blue not to treat that person like shit. Valuable readers of the NETWORK should be given a fair amount of deference regarding this sort of thing. Guy has posted 300 comments at various sites on SB Nation, the majority here. I assume his contributions are worthwhile, or at least worthwhile enough to Jimmy such that you owe him a responsibility to tread softly where you engage in behavior that could have a profound effect on that user’s willingness to frequent SB Nation sites.
What it comes right back to is: Why the fuck are you in the business of stifling sports discussions on a network that is built and designed and operated exclusively for that purpose? Why should we even have websites, if that’s how we’re going to treat readers???

Re:

Yes.
Yes.
—————————-
I guess the problem is with the question you’re asking. When deciding whether to delete someone else’s words, you shouldn’t be asking some subjective nonsense about “meaningful contributions” but rather whether someone’s work so exceeds the bounds of decency to require deleting. The people you may not think are “meaningful” in their “contributions” are the people this network is designed to encourage. Do I think the posts above are great? No, but they are the work product we’re supposed to produce, and in so far as that is true they are “meaningful contributions.” Why should we even have websites designed to produce comments if we’re… deleting comments?
This is not an “out of line” issue. I don’t think you are “out of line” for deleting comments (out of what line?) I just think it’s a stupid policy to delete posts that don’t violate one of the things from on high that are deemed unnecessary, which typically is restricted to things like racism. I go to your site and see King Richard calling people “retards” and it strikes me as ABSOLUTELY INSANE that you’re deleting merely gloating comments but not someone making fun of the mentally handicapped? We have writers on this network who have gotten in trouble for that. Never has a writer gotten in trouble for gloating.
Once YOU get in the business of determining what subjectively meaningless posts you aren’t going to allow on your site, you put me, Jimmy, and all our readers at a HUGE disadvantage. It’s difficult enough trying to manage a network of hundreds of sports blogs without readers having to worry about their posts getting deleted because you don’t like it when your team loses and has to hear about it. The bottom line is that any policy regarding banning comments should emphasize RESTRAINT by the people exercising that power, especially against the very people doing the very things Stampede Blue and every other SB Nation website is designed to promote, in determining what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate content.
You want to delete profanity, racism, etc. fine those are all bright line rules that are easy to follow (though excepting racism, all of them probably earn the commenter a warning first, yea?). What bright line rule have you created here? Don’t “post something that has no merit other than to instigate and rub salt into other fans wounds”? Well obviously a lot of people disagree with your assesment of that. Worse still, do we really want to be the Sports Blog Network of over-sensitive hosts who ban people or delete their content for hurting our mere feewings? Is that going to make us a larger network? Is that going to encourage people to engage in constructive discussions about sports, really?
As people with 1) common goal of growing a blogging network who 2) have the ability to delete the hard work of the people who make us grow, we have shared goals and responsibilities. And when you unilaterally take it upon yourself to do damage to potential readers and contributors to the network, you better do so when you’re on surer moral highground than the nonsense demonstrated in this thread. If you honestly deleted or would delete the things you quoted above, you are wrong for doing so. If you did that to one of my readers, someone who had contributed 300 comments to my website, you and I wouldn’t be having the discussion, I’d be having it first with Brad, then with the person above him, then with the person above him, and so on up the line. Perhaps there is a long overdue discussion among the SB Nation bloggers about the responsibilities and duties we owe to each other in Re: other people’s readers. The kind of thing you’ve deleted, especially given the circumstances, I very much doubt will carry the day if that’s the manner the discussion is framed.
If you delete what one of MY readers writes and it is of similar content to that posted above, we’re going to have a problem. I am going to get it fixed either by Brad or someone else who will get it fixed, and barring that I’ll simply decide that if my readers can’t get treated fairly by your website, you can expect the same from me and it will be BAN BAN BAN BAN shake n bake and King Richard etc. Some of the people at your site I would LOVE to take the initiative of simply banning from ever posting at my site right now, because I have subjectively decided that they (and others, at other websites) have nothing “meaningful” to contribute to HH. But out of respect for the fellow bloggers on the network, out of an understanding for what it is we are trying to do here, I don’t do that.
Restraint is the word of the day. Deleting comments is the last resort, not the first.
Wrong wrong wrong wrong.

I was drawn to SB Nation when I found it and love these sites
because the level of discussion is almost always higher than those type of posts. That is what I feel makes these blogs and the network so great. There are countless places to talk about the NFL on the internet, but this one is full of knowledgeable, insightful people who generally discuss the game on a much higher level than the average forum. When I see posts that hurt the feature that brought me here I get (maybe overly) upset. If Brad or someone above him wants to lay out the rules for me I’ll follow them, until then I’ll do what I feel is the right thing and if I do one thing you feel is a mistake over 6 months then I don’t think I’m doing to badly.

Re:
There’s nothing wrong with expecting and wanting a high level of discourse, but just because a fan, perhaps in their weaker moment, goes to your site after a game and gloats a bit doesn’t mean they are singularly incapable of high-brow sports discussion. The better remedy for the comments you discussed is to steer the discussion towards football. The remedy you chose was a harsh one; how frustrating must it be for readers of the network to log on and find out the things they wrote were simply deleted? Especially in this context. As much as we both want insightful sports discussion, are you certain that everyone at your website, my website, this website, always maintains a high level of civility and intellectual honesty and insight in our own front page posts? Are you sure that Brad (like me, like jimmy, like everyone else) has not at some point, in a weak moment, posted something that would anger a rival fan?
One of the dangers of imposing confusing standards on your readers is that you subject yourself to those same standards. Are we, as writers, going to benefit from that discussion? I would never subject myself to that kind of scrutiny because I would never delete a post from a reader that POSSIBLY looked like something I’d done in the past. I can go read plenty of inflammatory posts on Stampede Blue or any other site on the network. If that’s what gets deleted, we’re losing many readers’ comments. This isn’t about the one comment.
It’s as simple as restraint. The power to delete someone else’s work may seem trivial when you’ve already concluded that the content of what they write is substantively useless, but the other guy probably wouldn’t have posted it a) if he agreed with your assessment, b) thought you were going to delete it. And when you exercise that fairly awesome, by internet standards, power, it pisses the shit out of people. It makes people emotional, it makes them critical of the manner in which a particular blog is run and, by extension, the network is run. It INVITES antagonization. Why are we even having this discussion here, you think?
Wouldn’t a better remedy have been to say “Guys, can we try and talk about football instead of just gloating?”
At the end of the day, besides all that, this is really about the tone of the website. Stampede Blue is not the Nice Guys Website. That’s not what makes the site what it is today, ostensibly its popularity is married to the tone of its authors, which includes Brad. In other words: The success of Stampede Blue is a direct result of what you guys write. But if that tone is adversarial much of the time — and it is, and no one could reasonably argue differently — then you can’t possibly act surprised when commenters adopt the tone of the authors of the website. We’ve GOT Nice Guy Websites that probably deal with very few, if any, adversarial gloating fans of other teams. If you don’t have an adversarial tone, people have less incentive to come over and get angry on you.
Were you legitimately surprised that some Titans fans were gloating? Or were you pissed off about a loss? Was deleting someone else’s work the last resort? Were there other available remedies?
All I’m asking or suggesting, as a co-contributor to this whole SB Nation thing, is that you use restraint in exercising deletion powers against people who I have an interest in keeping around. I want my readers to get a fair shake, and they can’t do that if you’re deleting the things you say you’re willing to delete.

BBS actually said we were about as good as the Texans, you want to see his post? I doubt he believes this, considering a) we haven’t lost to them in years, b) they have never had a winning season, and c) they were winless when he posted that inflammatory statement. BBS simply took the opportunity to take a dig at Titans fans knowing this would piss them off.
If someone from your site goes out of their way to call us a sh*tty team when the facts clearly prove otherwise, I am not gonna let the facts speak for themselves alone, you will get called out and taunted when you are proven wrong. That’s a rivalry. And that’s what being a passionate fan is about.

Shake’n’bake, you don’t have to like me, and you don’t even have to agree with anything I say, but if you can’t see the subjectivity involved in establishing who the “instigator” is, you’re missing the point in a massive way. Is this really your way of ruling over your little patch of internet real estate? Are you intoxicated and corrupted by what little power you’ve been granted? You think you magnanimously gave me chances to not simply poke fun at people? I think you can see by the response of other bloggers here that what you are doing is counter-productive.
My perspective on the situation is that I like to post about football; but when someone goes on the offensive with me I’ll dig in my heels and strike back. I am respectful of people and ideas unless they involve personal attacks and/or outright lies. I disagree with posters on MCM and elsewhere, but until i am provoked, I always treat them them with respect and dignity. The same cannot be said of BBS, King Richard, tehgrindcrusher, and coltsfanawalt.
When your Colts, after dominating the Division for 5 years finally lose grip and we reclaim what Titans fans have wanted since 2002 (i.e. the AFC South), you’re damn right I’m gonna go and rub it in the nose of some guy who goes out of his way to insult me. To those Colts fans who don’t act like the people I have listed above, I say tough luck, and better luck next year… and I mean it, in a collegial way, not as an expression of schadenfreude.
I don’t doubt for a second that the Colts playing so poorly this year pisses you off either, shake, but that’s the life of a fan whose team is not winning.

But do you notice something here? It’s not a personal attack directed at a player or a poster – I’m just making my point. My point is that the Texans had no business verbally trashing a team that has categorically dominated for the entire history of their franchise.
Honestly, I don’t see what’s wrong with those posts, and if someone came onto MCM doing the same it wouldn’t bother me one bit, especially if we, at MCM, had written checks our asses couldn’t cash.

Trying it your way Skin Patrol
I would really appreciate it if you let the past comments on the Titans drop going forward and followed the example of the other Titans fans that posted over at Stampede Blue.

Those past comments don’t go away. I stop when I feel things are squared up. And it will happen again, if I feel it is warranted. My behavior is predictable.
Tell your guys not to call me a jerk, tell your admins not to call our players fat sacks of shit, and tell your posters not to tell us to fuck off.

I appreciate that.
And I hope, for my sake, that it gets results.
I think even in the wild west of the internet you always get less done with sticks than with honey.
Having said that, I don’t think the strength of the position is really getting things done, rather it’s avoiding making bad situations worse. The big picture is that we’re in the process of creating large network of thousands of commenters, and we need to do things that strike the right balance between permissive appreciation of views we disagree with without otherwise sacrificing a semblence of intellectual discourse. My position is, simply, what was said that you deleted shouldn’t have been, because it was miles away from that “right balance.”
I re-read this entire thread and wonder that the meanest things said were said by me, which informs that you and BeansCarter have a lot more common ground than either of you probably think. There’s no reason it needed to come to this.

listen, shake
you seem to be pretty reasonable but you have to understand that as long as you have an admin over there that is an insufferable jack ass, it’s going to solicit a response from people. and no one is gonna take you seriously when you feign outrage over something so mild in comparison to a lot of the retarded garbage he posts.

Agree/Disgree
I agree with you that some of Beans Carter’s posts are dumb. I disagree that you must therefore delete it. Part of sports and being a fan of sports (particularly one involved in message boards) is putting up with the rival team’s toolbag fans. We put up with BigBlueShoe’s ridiculous comments. We let him know he is being a toolbag, but we leave it on the site. Obviously, its your website (sort of) and you can do what you want. However, I dont think the above comment the day after a MNF game between the two teams warrants a delete. If BeansCarter posts the same thing next week on your board, then he is trolling. But the day after a loss to a rival, you have to put up with some crap.

Can I just say how frustrating this whole thing has been.
I mean, generally speaking, I like all of the AFC South teams. As with college football—where I will root for SEC teams against the rest of the country—I will tend to root for AFC South teams against the rest of the League. I have a familiarity with all of the teams in the AFC South, and in general, if the division is strong, then that’s a good for the Titans—at least in terms of publicity and respect.
So, bottom line, I want to follow the Colts. Not obsessively but certainly within reason and maybe a bit beyond. And I don’t mind the trash-talking, especially in the Fan Shots/Posts, but when it’s the leader of the board serving as the primary instigator, it actually sucks. Because there’s no way to get away from it. There’s no “Just the Facts” approach available. I have to also hear that my players are “fat sacks of shit” and all the rest of it.
And that’s why no one here is being at all supportive of the tone-it-down school of thought. Because the alternative to gloating after a big win is just continuing to take it unendingly from a guy who comes across as an unmitigated horse’s ass. Which, I think, none of us would actually put up with in real life. Certainly, I would not.

I don’t care enough to post over there. It’s just petty and pathetic, that’s all. I honestly thought he had learned a lesson this week with everyone’s thoughtful posts about the utility of censoring a sports blog.

After a quick check
titanjoe is a member of 1 site, Stampede Blue. He joined at 4:53 AM this morning, and made 2 posts, both of which added nothing to the conversation.
You have a very long track record on this site, as well as many others. The two situations are very different. How do you know he didn’t curse or add a racial slur?
I really think, for the most part, we are all taking the loss with humility. As far as thread topics goes, I think other Colts fans did a good job saying the officiating had nothing to do with the loss. One play, towards the middle of the 3rd quarter, doesn’t make or break a game. Especially a play Jackson very well could have committed the foul. We just never saw the replay.
gramsey has been over there all day, without any problems. He even called out how stupid that post was.

um...
Shake never deleted one of titanjoe’s posts.
He deleted one of mine.
And titanjoe, who has been a member for all of two seconds, shit on Colts fans unprovoked.
What irks me is that shake had to take a gratuitous opportunity to make reference to my post he deleted.
Despite the fact I had a very good reason to go and rub salt in the wound of a poster who had come after me personally, shake felt it necessary to point out that my post is even worse than this post by titanjoe.
What shake needs to learn, is that he was wrong to do what he did, and his assessment of the situation is way off. He’d been granted a certain amount of authority, and not only did he abuse it, he likes to brag about the fact he deleted a post that didn’t violate any terms of usage.

You delete that because of the Jew part,
but BBS opened the door to the other part with this post.
That is why I think it is so funny that it is that site that is deleting posts. Their site is run by someone who makes his name off of posts like that (minus the racist part. I have never seen BBS write anything racist nor am I calling him a racist).
