Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Now We Know What Beat LenDale Is Dancing To Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Somebody add another axle to the bandwagon because we're 6-0 and people from all over will be jumping aboard once we inviscerate Indy next week!!!!!!!!!!

Tennessee_titans_30x21 LenDale White became the first Titan to rush for 3 TDs in one game since Eddie George did it in 2000, and White combined with Crazy Legs to set a new franchise record for rushing with 332 yards total.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 How's this for run defense: the Titans held the Chiefs to 41 yards on 13 carries, and racked up 8 tackles for loss.  That's what happens when you set-up camp in your opponent's backfield...

Tennessee_titans_30x21 These Titans are prefect at being humble as well.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Lavelle 'The Hawk' Hawkins had a huge impact on Sunday's game, but not with his receiving prowess:

Rookie receiver Lavelle Hawkins used his hands to help the Titans beat the Chiefs on Sunday, catching two passes for 11 yards in his first NFL start.

Yet his best work was done without a football in his grasp — shielding running backs Chris Johnson and LenDale White with downfield blocking that helped spark a franchise single-game rushing record.
Tennessee_titans_30x21 Even more reasons I can't wait for next Monday night:
In addition to "Code Blue" for the Colts-Titans game — 68,000 light blue T-shirts will be handed out to fans as they enter LP Field — Hank Williams Jr. is slated to sing the national anthem and former Titans quarterback Steve McNair will serve as honorary captain.
Tennessee_titans_30x21 Something tells me Goodell will level a big fine against Crazy Legs for his  bongo filled celebration Sunday, but who cares.  It was sweet to see the guys have a little fun in a rout.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 If you're going to constantly whine about officiating, at least be correct in your basic facts... the refs nailed that FG call.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Peter King comes through with a Keith Bulluck quote that sums up why these guys just keep winning:
1. I think I like the Titans' level-headedness. I asked Keith Bulluck if he thought the Titans, the only unbeaten team left in football, should be considered the league's best team, and he responded the way he should have -- that this isn't college football, and polls are not involved. "Too early to think about that anyway,'' he said. "We just have to go out every week and play with this kind of intensity. What we talked about before this game was, 'We can't let [the Chiefs] stay in it and think they can play with us. Get on 'em early.' '' I'd say a 34-10 win, with 334 pulverizing rushing yards, did the trick.

There's a whole lot of internet out there, so if you have a link you'd like to submit for tomorrow's Morning Links, email me at mcmaugustwest@gmail.com!  (Be sure to include your commenting handle so I can give you semi-anonymous credit.)

I love the win !!

6 and 0 sounds great to me. The only concern I really have is that the Titans are not passing enough. Running the ball is great, and Johnson is one of the best backs in the league however I think the run game will be limited by some future opponents. The Titans will have to pass the ball at some point, I am concerned it will look sloppy and inconsistent when they actually need to have it.

It is a concern BUT....

….yesterday shouldn’t be any indicator of the passing game. When you don’t need to throw any passes they usually end up not looking that good when you do.

If Jeff Fisher KNEW that he could gain 3.5 yards/carry on EVERY carry for the rest of time...

…we would NEVER see another pass from the Titans.

Besides, like most days, yesterday was about matchups. The Chiefs have the worst run defense in football but their scondary is about average. So ’Dinger went with what worked. This is as it should be. Moreover, yesterday saw both TEs more involved in the game. That is a good thing.

What reasonable coach would throw the ball if they had that guarantee?

by SuperHorn on Oct 20, 2008 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plenty of them.

I mean, I see your point, but you know, there are plenty of coaches who have gone away from running games that are working and then lost football games.

Watch a tape of the game against the Ravens

If you want to see us go away from the run game. The last couple drives of that game were excellent. We weren’t able to run at all but KC and B. Jones were able to hook up multiple times in the end. I think in the final drive we didn’t run once. I doubt we’ll see any better defense than the Ravens this year and we proved our passing game can handle business when they need to. That being said I think our O-line is good enough that we’ll always be able to run a little.

Great Win

I don’t think there is any question that the Titans are the best team in football. We did what were supposed to yesterday, and then some. Hat tip to both lines for a dominating game.

Anyone else wish they had Lendale on their fantasy team yesterday?

by SuperHorn on Oct 20, 2008 9:30 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

There is no doubt..

..that they have been the most consistent team in football. That says a lot in a year that has been marked by inconsitency.

Agree

I’ve always thought that great teams have to start up front, in the trenches, on both sides of the ball. This team is solid on the offensive side, especially as it relates to run blocking. But, it’s the defensive line that makes this team hum. It’s the best in the NFL. Getting solid pressure with the front four makes everything else easier on defense, from effective blitzing to coverage. The fact that they can still impose their will without KVB speaks to the depth/talent of this D-Line.

The next game will be great to watch. I was shocked how bad the Colts looked yesterday. The Titans will be “the team” every opponent is gunning for here on out. It is great to be in that position

I think

… the Colts were the team caught “looking ahead”.

Steve Smith was on tv this morning talking about how the Titans need

to pick up the passing game in order to get to the Superbowl. He said today the Titans are the best team in the NFL but doesn’t know about next week because of the lack of passing. I personally agree with him and would like to see the Titans step it up a bit myself in that area. I know the Titans can get it done on the ground against quite a few opponents, but I honestly feel they are going to NEED the passing game to look sharp against possibly the Colts and the Packers. Right the passing game is not sharp or great, but I am certain it can improve.

by Joy Kat on Oct 20, 2008 10:02 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That is mystifying to me

Noone can name a game where we couldn’t pass the ball. The fact is that we haven’t needed to. Steve Smith is a wide receiver of course he’s going to say we need to pass more. Jeff Fisher wont pass just to pass. He wont throw it just to make people happy. Like Danno said it’s all about matchups and our run game pretty much always matches up well against our opponents. Of our remaining opponents I can only think of a couple defenses that may force us to really pass: The Bears and the Steelers.

Were you a fan of this team in ’99? They got within 1 yard of taking the Super Bowl to overtime with virtually no passing game.

Perhaps, however I do appreciate how good of a coach Fisher is.

I don’t think there is anyone better at his job than he is. I became a fan of the Titans because of Fisher and his coaching style and that (former Husker) Kyle Vanden Bosch is on the team.

Actually the punt/kickoff return coverage game

Is the worst part of our team from what I can see, and if I could wave a magic fan wand and improve one area of the team, it would be that one and not the passing offense.

And I think we already played the team (ravens) where we needed the passing game to work the most. Colts aren’t as good against the run as those guys are. Packers have a pretty good secondary – I think our run game is going to need to work at least decently to beat those guys in their home field. We’ve still got a game against the Jags too – we’ll need to pass respectably well in that one.

The passing game looks like a C+ to me. That’s not bad. If we had an A passing game with the rest of the team as good as it is, we’d have one of the best teams to ever take the field, period,

by numbertenox on Oct 20, 2008 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

A passing game? Against the Colts?

If there’s one lesson the last three years have taught us, it’s that you can run all over the Colts. You have to have the threat obviously, but our O-Line just makes pounding the rock through their small defensive players all too easy.

Michael Roos doesn't eat pitas because NOTHING BREAKS THE POCKET ON HIS WATCH!!!

by August West on Oct 20, 2008 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True.

Bob Sanders forces teams to balance it out more, but even so, all you have to do is take a look at the stats-

Indianapolis Defense

Passing: 175.5 YPG (3rd)
Rushing: 153.5 YPG (29th)

Experience has taught us that there are two keys to beating Indy:

1. Keep the ball out of Manning’s hands.
2. Don’t give up the big play.

The best way to do both of those is to run the ball. You eat up clock and have less chance of giving up a pick-6 or something similar. The past two seasons we’ve done pretty well against them by adhering to those strategies. You don’t want to be too predictable, but at the same time, if it works, why change it?

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Oct 20, 2008 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let me add, I don't want the Titans to go away from what is working at all.

The running game is working along with superior defense. I just would have liked to see about 6 more passing attempts yesterday. Not a big deal at all.

by Joy Kat on Oct 20, 2008 10:08 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

But why?

Whenyou are running well, you’re also doing a few other things that are very, very good:
1. Winning time of possession.
2. Tiring out the other team’s defense.
3. Allowing fewer opportunities for turnovers.
4. Imposing your will on the other team.
5. Keeping the opposing Offense off the field.

These are all things that are good. When you can run it successfully even when they are expecting the run, usually that means you are not just winning, you are dominating.

by DannoE on Oct 20, 2008 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here are my supporting reasons for passing the ball yesterday about 6 more times.

1. The Titans had built up a good lead, so the outcome was not in jeopardy.
2. The Titans may risk becoming predictable .
3. Establishing timing between receivers and qb in game situations is important.
4. Collins has not looked super sharp yet, maybe more repetition would help.
5. Give the defense a different look.
6. Nice pass plays are a lot of fun to watch. (personal opinion)

I realize you do risk dropped balls which stops the clock and risk interceptions which can lead to potential points. However I am concerned that the passing game will need to come into play a little (emphasis on the word little ) more to beat some of the teams out there.

by Joy Kat on Oct 20, 2008 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll give you #3 as a good reason, especially with the WRs who started yesterday.

But #‘s 2 and 5, I think, are strengths. You’re predictable but still moving the ball. They know what’s coming but cannot stop it. This is demoralizing for the opponent, and it has the virtue of putting less on tape for your future opponents to study.

On #4… that’s a lost cause. if VY were in t here, it’d be a better argument, but with KC, he is what he is. At Year 15, he’s not gonna evolve into anything we haven’t already seen.

I don’t know what to tell you about #6. Drink more beer?

..and have been for years. That is why it is so beautiful that they still run the ball so well.

Special Formations

I wasn’t surprised that Vince didn’t see the field yesterday. They didn’t need a changeup because the running game was working so well. But, do you guys see Vince coming in for a few designed plays against Indy?

If we're gonna see it, you'll see some of it early.

Think about the Ravens game. They set up stuff for the later quarters by running specific things early in the game.

If there’s gonna be a VY Package, I would look for a few vanilla looks early in the game and then some kind of wacko variant later. That said, if the running game is working without gadget plays, then I wouldn’t look for anything tricky.

Lendale White leads in RB touchdowns. CJ leads the AFC in yards.

So, tell me again, why do we need the passing game? I thought we could have had VY come in the 4th Qtr to hand the ball off. Crazy legs bongo for ROY

I think passing has looked good so far but my only concern

if you would even call it a concern would be playing from behind. We haven’t done it all year which is a good thing, but what will the passing game look like if it’s obvious that we will be passing. That’s the only thing I’m curious to see in the coming weeks.

This was just posted on the front page of another site, and it really made me laugh:

From BBS: Just like with other big games in the past, we will likely get hit with a barrage of fan trolls this week. We ask that you please not dignify them with responses. Let folks like me delete the offensive comments and ban the really bad trolls who act like classless punks. Just remember, for the last three years, our team has started 7-0, and with every team our guys played we fans always treated the opposing fans with courtesy and respect. If fans of another undefeated team do not reciprocate that courtesy, then it tells you something about that fanbase. Act with class and act with dignity. Then, after our team knocks theirs from the ranks of the unbeaten… act with the same class and dignity. That is Colts football.

Stay classy BBS!

I was kinda hoping they'd beat Green Bay

for that exact reason. Sure we’d have to listen to people talk about the Colts sniffing at our heels all week, but beating them would have been SO much more satisfying if they were 4-2 coming in. Now even if we win, they were only a .500 team anyway, while them beating us is a huge upset/season-altering momentum boost/exposing of the Titans as only a so-so team with an easy schedule thus far.

Aggravating is a good way to put it.

Who Said

It would be a “huge upset/season-altering momentum boost/exposing of the Titans”? I don’t recall anyone saying that but you. We win, we move on to New England on the 2nd and still face a 2 game deficit. We lose, we eat humble pie and still move on to New England on the 2nd. In fact, I’ll do you all one better. I’ll come back here next Tuesday morning and you all can treat me like Tina Turner if we lose. I won’t hide in my grandma’s basement.

Seriously, I came over here to gauge how the fan base was responding to a 6-0 start, saw this “once we inviscerate Indy next week” and decided to poke you guys in the ribs for fun. Notice my initial post wished you guys good luck this week. I didn’t kick your mother in her face. Sure, I called him Poopstainsworth, because, well, that’s what he is. He’s a beast on the field but he kicked a guy in the throat. I doubt he reads your site and is offended by a middle class white boy saying he’s a turd human being.

ummm

it was his face, and more of a stomp than a kick. call him some 9yr old insult to his face and he might be willing to demonstrate the difference between the two for you.

I'm going to assume this was a response to me.

First, you seem to have misinterpreted the statement. It was not a summary of what has been said, but rather, a prediction of what will be said, specifically by the media, should we lose to Colts on Monday. Though especially for the third one, “an exposing of the Titans” I fail to see how you can claim it is unwarranted given the statements being made over at Stampede Blue about how the Titans are not as good as their record indicates. I’ll grab some quotes if you really want me to.

As far as coming over to poke us in the ribs about our response to our start, I’m not sure what you were expecting. We’re undefeated and justifiably proud of that fact. If our knees are not exactly shaking with terror at the Colts approach, perhaps it is because we regularly played closely contested games against the significantly better Indy teams of recent memory; not only that, we did it with markedly less talent on the field than the Titans currently possess.

Finally, no, we don’t think Albert Haynesworth cares what you say about him. That still doesn’t explain why you feel it’s okay to come over to our blog and call him names.

Name calling

Poopstainsworth?

You stay classy Colts fans.
