There are several theories:
- Norm Chow's playcalling sucks.
- VY has hurt his quad twice this season, and either he or the coaches have decided he should lay off on the scrambling until it's fully healed.
3. VY listened too much to his critics who said in the offseason that he isn't a good enough pocket passer to make it in the NFL, so he's trying to prove them wrong by not running.
I prefer to think it's either #1 or #2, because those are both more easily fixed than #3. #1 by FIRING NORM CHOW, #2 by time.

And it's just so wrong-headed...
I mean, look, there are some VERY successful QBs in this league who scramble, even if they don't rush forwards.
Jeff Garcia rolls out of the pocket on virtually every play. He's into his 30s now, and STILL making it work.
Jay Cutler also rolls out of the pocket a lot, even if I wouldn't call him very successful yet.
Donovan McNabb and Steve McNair are also 2 very good examples, although they are now both showing the possible downside, as cumulative injuries are hurting them.

Yeah, pretty much.
But VY is never going to be Peyton Manning, and we don't want a Peyton-like player on this team, anyway. A prolific pocket passer would be wasted in Jeff Fisher's old-school game philosophy.

I think BY hurt his leg a lot worse than he...
Also, the Chargers specifically schemed to keep him in the pocket, and they are pretty fast on Defense. He still had one decent run, but especially in the second half, the O-Line was TERRIBLE. NO ONE could have succeeded with that pressure and field position.

I have noticed as well that he was not smiling
This week against the Chargers he had that same concerned look on his face. It was as if he knew he was in a big time game and he was starting to realize that he is not the best player on the field anymore and that it would take a monumental effort to win the ball game. Perhaps he is maturing a little, who knows? One can only hope.
