A Look Ahead: Our First Round Pick

I think it's fairly obvious to anyone who has followed this team this year, that the Titan's most glaring need is for a big play wide reciever.  This becomes especially true if the Titans are able to re-sign Haynesworth, and if Pac-Man can finally get his act together.  Seing as our first round pick this year will hopefully be near the very end of the round, Mario Manningham and some of the other 'electric' wide recievers will probably be off the board.  This leaves the Titans with two real options that I feel would fit this team the best, those being Adarius Bowman (OSU) and Limus Sweed (Texas).  I know that a lot of people are in love with Sweed because of the Texas connection with Vince and some of his highlight reel catches, but after looking at some film of Bowman and watching a bit of the Insight bowl I'm pretty convinced that he can and will be a star in the NFL.

Firstly, The Measurables:
Height: 6'4" - Weight: 220lbs - 40 Time: 4.53 - 40 Low: 4.48 - 40 High: 4.62

These numbers put Bowman right in the mold of the young big wide recievers that have been having a such success in the NFL as of late.  In fact, Bowman is physically almost identical to Marques Colston, Brandon Marshall, and Dwayne Bowe.

Colston - 6'4" 231 lbs, 4.55 on the 40
Marshall - 6'4" 230 lbs, 4.52 on the 40
Bowe - 6'3" 221lbs, 4.51 on the 40

It's no secret that these young recievers have had standout careers thus far, and all indications point to their future success.  Bowman looks to follow in their footsteps, and I would really rather the Titans didn't pass on him as they have those three recievers.

Secondly, The Intangibles:
Adarius Bowman has two other unique and key features that work heavily favor of him being a star in the NFL.  The first of these is his blocking ability.  After watching the first half of the Insight Bowl, I saw Bowman hold blocks on corners, safeties, and linebackers with an effectiveness that reminded me a lot of Hines Ward, and seeing as how much this team likes to run the ball, having an effective blocking wide reciever on the outside is an invaluable asset.  Another key factor is the fact that his wide recievers coach is the same man who coached Randy Moss at Marshall.  While this may seem like an insignificant detail, it must be remembered that Randy Moss came into the league as one of the most NFL ready recievers that the game has ever seen.  He posted record breaking rookie touchdown numbers with 17, and was third in the league with over 1300 yards that year.  While it is unlikely that Bowman would produce numbers quite like that, it is at least helpful to know that he has a coach who knows how to get recievers ready for the league.

So, come on Mike Reinfeldt, get us a play maker!

I think we need a guy who can seperate.
Maybe we should go for someone with a little more speed?

by nvemvp23 on Jan 1, 2008 12:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree..
But Bowman has shown the ability to separate, as have those other three proven wide recievers, plus he would give us an option for jump balls near the end zone.

why hopefully
a pick late in the round?

"Seing as our first round pick this year will hopefully be near the very end of the round"

by gotitans86 on Jan 1, 2008 3:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Haha, because that would mean..
That we advanced further through the playoffs.. Right now we have the 25th pick I think, but if we advance it will drop a few places.

Deshaun Jackson
It isn't that much of a stretch.  Most projections have him going in the middle of the first round.  Talk about stretching the field...that kid has some wheels.  IMO it is worth trading a late round draft pick in order to move up and draft him.

by SuperHorn on Jan 1, 2008 6:57 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Heck NO!
DT to go along side Haynesworth.  I think we'll find a good WR in round 2 or 3.  But if we could get another Dominate DT next to Albert then lord have mercy on Manning, Garrard, and Shaub(sp)!

Plus I like Gage, R. Williams and think that Williams can really become a very good WR.

by white02slpss on Jan 1, 2008 8:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Don't you
think our Defense is good enough with Albert to where we could pick a DT in the 2nd rd? He makes our whole D-line better anyway. Why draft 1 if you have him? Tony Brown looks pretty good when Albert is healthy.  The only reason would be injury.

We need a WR pretty bad. Gage and Roydell are descent 2 and 3 WR. We need a number 1. I would rather sign a good FA WR that has proved something than draft 1 anyway. I wouldn't mind seeing Fred Davis the TE from USC on our team. Vince could really use another TE. Davis and Scaife would make a nice combo.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 1, 2008 10:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah but...
...injury is a GOOD reason to draft another quality DT.  Haynesworth has been injured EVERY season.  And I'm not knocking him by saying that, but it's true.  Plus, he can't take EVERY snap.  And then, too, they can franchise him for next year, but after that?  No long-term deal is in place.  If you need to potentially replace him, then this is the year to try to draft his replacement.

Injury is
good reason for us to draft another quality DT. But I think drafting 1 in the 2nd rd. would be good enough. We need a strarting WR, and if we don't get 1 in FA WR is a more glaring need.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 2, 2008 10:08 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

In addition
the guys picked in that area the last few years were guys like John McArgo and Tank Tyler. I don't want to spend a 1st on DTs that caliber.

I agree with White
Drafting a WR in this league is risky business. It would better for us to pick up a WR via Free Agency. We would be more likely to get a proven commodity. When Haynesworth was out this season we lost every game;  that is proof we need Defensive Line depth. Knowing Coach Fisher we will draft defense, because, as we all know, he loves to lean on our defense.

by theologic on Jan 1, 2008 10:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i agree as well
we can afford to pick up quality wr outside of first round. first round receivers are exceptionally unreliable anyways.

by gotitans86 on Jan 1, 2008 10:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

All of the
wr we've been picking in the middle rounds have done nothing really. Roydell is the only one that looks to have a little bit of promise. Where is Paul Williams?

Hopefully David Givins will do something at some point.

I say either sign a Wr in FA, there are plenty avail this year or draft one in the 1st rd. Go DT in the 2nd rd. and pick TE in the 3rd if Fred Davis is there. Don't know what rd he is projected to go.

I don't
want Ginn or Meachem either. I want a D.Bowe. At least someone with size and speed that will go up and make a play.

what kind of receiver are we going to snag via free agency?  we need a first round guy, and we need to take a gamble...

i take it all back
we need to trade up and grab manningham:

All of the
mock drafts and rankings I've seen, we wouldn't have to trade up to get Manningham. And being a Big Ten fan, I've seen lots of him. And he drops a lot of easy passes.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 2, 2008 10:11 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

needs
--WR....that has good hands and speed, but most of all playmaking ability
--OG...gotta replace maybe both
--TE...this is higher than most think
--DT...this year showed that DL is the most important positions on the field
--DE...ditto
--RB...one with speed to offset LenDale the Whale

So I count 6 definite needs....if we hope to nab 2 in FA, then we will need to get the other 4 in the draft....

in the first round, I have no idea what position i would target....

anyone think NE will trade the 7th overall pick for Pacman Jones......hahahahaha

by zackmann on Jan 2, 2008 9:23 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

You have to address WR in FA.
I say that because we've had SO MANY busts in the last few years.  Think about it: if Tyrone Calico had panned out, we wouldn't be having this discussion.  So, since OL and DL are both higher-percentage picks, your better GMs will tend to spend high-round draft picks there when the needs are there, talent being equal.

Assuming Chris Brown is gone next year, I think you take a chance on a lower-round RB.  You still have LenDale and Chris Henry, and Quinton Ganther is good enough that with the other needs... well, you gotta take a chance somewhere.  That is where I'd take it.  On the other hand, if they could somehow get D. McFadden from Arkansas, that'd be worth a lot IMHO in the current offense.

I'd rank another DT higher than DE and make a real effort to re-sign Odom.

I'm not too conversant with the top TE's, but I've heard there might be a couple of good ones in the 2nd-3rd.

Anybody else?

Agree
We need to sign WR in FA. But if we do not, I think we have to go WR in the 1st.

I've already come to grips with the idea we will probably end up with the same HBs next season. Chris Brown hasn't shown enough over the course of the year to entice anyone to sign him. So we will probably end up bringing him back again at a cheap price. I thought Henry showed good ability before the suspension. And I think Lendale has done a good job. If he lost a few more pounds, he could be really good.

I also agree with Zackman that TE is a bigger need than most think.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 2, 2008 10:20 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Why do
you say OGs need to be replaced? I think Bell and Olsen are both pretty good. I think our Center is old, and Amano has been pushed around a bit. I see that as a bigger need.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 2, 2008 10:22 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Olsen
is probably going to retire.
Go Titans!

by gramsey712 on Jan 2, 2008 10:31 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

also
bell is a FA, i believe....

i think there is a really good chance there will be 2 new OG's next year....could be in house (amano and one of our current backups/practice squad players) or we go get one in the draft or FA....

but we will be one of the teams leading the pack in terms of going after OG....

by zackmann on Jan 2, 2008 10:49 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I hope we
re-sign Bell. I would imagine we have the money. But if Olsen retires, and we lose Bell. That woudld obviously make OG a pretty big draft need.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 2, 2008 11:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Really!
I haven't heard that. That would suck.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 2, 2008 10:32 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Thank you
for posting that. I would imagine we will re-sign J.Bell.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 2, 2008 10:48 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but
The only problem is that J Bell's agent is Rosenhause (sp?), so he might ask for too much money. We drafted a center last year that was supposed to be pretty good, but I don't know what happened to him. I would hope tho that between Loper and Amano we would only need another OG for depth.

by theologic on Jan 2, 2008 11:13 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Rosenhaus is exactly the reason....
....I think the Titans let Bell walk.  In my opinion you put your o line money in your tackles and center.  Overpaying guards is one of the things that got us in cap trouble last time.  Also, we have Mike Munchak who can develop guys (Bell was a 5th round pick).

The Titans have Amano, Loper and Leroy Harris, the center you are talking about, who will probably all get a shot at guard next season.  Mawae will probably only play for 1 or 2 more years and when he retires Amano or Harris will slide inside and play center.

I have nothing better
to do today. So I came up with a list over the last few drafts of WRs and DTs taken from the 15th pk to the 35th pk. Which is around 10 picks up and 10 picks down from where we will be drafting.

DT
Justin Harrell- Garbage

John McCargo- Not sure how he has been, but cannot be that good. Haven't heard too much about him.

Alan Branch- Has done nothing

Travis Johnson- Hasn't been bad, but hasn't been top 20 worthy. Havin his best season in his 3rd year. Wouldn't want to wait that long.

Mike Patterson- Solid player.

WR

Matt Jones- Sucks

Robert Meachem- Hasn't done S#$%

Santonio Holmes- A good threat. Wouldn't mind having him. Better than anyone we have.

Dwayne Bowe- Beast

Craig Davis- Not enough balls to go around. I still think he's also better than anyone we have.

Anthony Gonzalez- Better than anyone we have.

Mark Clayton- Crappy QB play in a crappy offense. Still has put up descent numbers.

Roddy White- Broke out with pro bowl type season on a horrid team. Don't want to wait till 3rd season though.

Reggie Brown- Solid player. Still probably better than anyone we have.

I'm back and forth
on Chad. Do we want drama that comes along with his skill? Especially with what he will cost. I'd probably take him anyway. Every week would definitely be interesting.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 2, 2008 11:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

As interesting as it is to ponder Chad in TN...
...I don't think there is any way in HELL he shows up in TN.  First off, unless he's got some personal character reference or history with J. Fisher, he's got exactly the wrong personality for the club.  Also, nothing Reinfeld has done makes me think he'd open up the checkbook like that.  Renny seems to like to look for diamonds in the rough; so far, I find myself thinking that's a good strategy in FA.

And then, too: Thigpen, Yancy; Givens, David; etc.  The list is too painful to recount.

I see Chad Johnson going somewhere like Atlanta, Washingto, or San Fransisco.  Those are the kind of clubs that would pay his kind of money.

Just out of pure spite
I wouldn't want McCareins or Mason back after they ran off to get a big ol payday and ended up on crappy teams.  But that is just emotion talking.

They get what they ask for and you can't always go home. Maybe they can just roll around in their money and think about what could have been.

As far as going WR or DT in the first round..
If we re-sign Haynesworth there should be no question it is WR..

We are after all 27th in pass yards and 32nd in pass TDs..
I think those numbers scare me a lot more than needing another DT next to Fat Al.

This is
what we really need. Pretty soon we will be the Texas Titans. A lot of mock drafts have us picking this guy. Looks good to me.

I would also really like to draft the QB that is throwing all these passes in these clips!

WoW
Sweed looks awesome! Also, with Vince already familiar with him he would be an instant addition to the offense. I officially change my stance. Draft Sweed with the 1st round pick!

I know
I'm just politican for a WR in the draft.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 3, 2008 4:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

If we had
a WR that could beat the defense, that threat would keep the Colts and other teams from using their Safety to spy Vince. That kills our Offense. Sanders is always in good position to make plays against the run cuz hes playing so much closer to the line of scrimmage. Extra things to keep in mind when considering drafting a DT.
