Pacman Suspended for 2007 Season

I am never around when this stuff happens.  I go for a run, come back and I got messages, emails and people in my office beating down my door.

Honestly, I am surprised.  I really thought that it would be half the season.  I thought that the sit down on the NFL Network at least earned him 4-6 games back.  I was wrong.

Here is the statement from Goddell:

''We must protect the integrity of the NFL,'' Goodell said in a statement. ''The highest standards of conduct must be met by everyone in the NFL because it is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right. These players, and all members of our league, have to make the right choices and decisions in their conduct on a consistent basis.''

Goddell walks the talk.  You have to give him that.  I am glad to see that he really is going to take a stand and clean up the league.  For all of the great things Paul Tagliabue did, his one negative was over looking off the field conduct.  Goddell is obviously not going to do that.

The more interesting quote is from Bud Adams:

''We appreciate the Commissioner's thoughtful decision today and the discipline plan imposed on Adam Jones,'' Titans Owner K.S. Bud Adams announced in a statement. ''We respect this decision and are confident this is in the best interest of the League and the team.''

''Unfortunately this decision does not end our deliberations about this player for our team,'' Adams said. ''We will need assurances from the player on a number of issues before we are comfortable having him return to the team. Until we see a change in behavior through his actions and until he shows the ability to avoid controversy off the field, we will move forward with the possibility that he may not return to this team.''

It will be interesting now to see the next step.  Pacman said in his interview with Deion that he would take whatever punishment he was given like a man.  We will see if that actually happens.  His lawyers has said on the radio here that he plans on fighting any suspension handed down.

If I were the Titans brass I would cut Pacman.  Think about all of the trouble he has gotten while he has been playing football.  There is no telling what will happen with all of the free time he is going to have on his hands.  The Titans need to disconnect their name from Pacman Jones.  This should make the decision easy.

Again, I hope that Pacman can turn it around for his sake.  It is always sad to see wasted talent.  Pacman hasn't completely wasted his yet and I hope he doesn't.  Hopefully this suspension is what he needs to turn his life around and have a fresh start.  That fresh start just needs to be in another city.

I wish this would have come down before I made my pick in the mock. The Titans will have to look for a corner/return man with that first pick now. You cannot enter the season with Reynaldo and Harper as your starting corners.

I agree
the best thing the Titans can do is to cut him and end the circus for Nashville.  This will continue to be a distraction and the Titans need to move on to the Post Pac Era.  They should look at a CB first in the draft and then look at WR.  I hope they can still get the RB from the Charges in some kind of deal that will give them some moer weight at RB.

Will the NFL
make salary considerations if the Titans do cut him?  Or will we still get hit with the cap penalty?
Go Titans!

You'd still owe
the signing bonus, just as if you cut the player for any other reason. If the team cuts him now they would save themselves his '06 base salary.

I'd love to hear arguments for why the Titans should be given a salary consideration in the event they cut Pacman. Under what premise would the team be deserving of a "break" from his contract?

2007 base salary
that is...

The Titans
won't have to pay the base as it is.  It goes back in their pocket as a result of the suspension.

The only way they won't be on the hook for the rest is if there is something in his contract.  Remember, he got arrested before he ever signed.  Hopefully Floyd Reese put an out in the contract.  We shall see....

I agree
This surprised me too. I had heard the talk that it would be a whole year, but we always hear outlandish rumors. To see it actually happen is pretty surprising.

If Pacman can keep himself out of trouble for the entire year he is away from the team... I'd be pretty impressed. Shocked, but impressed.

Well
After reading about the stipulations of his suspension its going to force his hand.

He has to meet once a week with the Team Director.  go to counsiling, He still has to go to team meetings and can work out.  Can't practice though.

So what the Commish is doing is taking football away. BUT not the "big brother" Keeping him around his teammates in a limited mannor.  Something they say these kids need.  So his pocket book is going to get hit hard because it's a year WITHOUT pay.

Any bets...
... that he will appeal and get the suspension lowered?

... that he doesn't even make it to pre-season before getting in trouble again?

Quick question
when was the last time a player ever appealed a suspension successfully?

by Skin Patrol on Apr 10, 2007 5:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Like I mentioned
he says he will take it like a man.  His lawyer says they will appeal.

The main problem he will have is the player's union isn't going to support his appeal.

Just a quick note...
Pacman's base salary does NOT go back into the teams bank account.  It's given to charity and counted against the teams salary cap.
