Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

Monday Morning Quick Hitters

The Titans appear to still be in the "wait and see" phase after three days of free agency.  Here are some notes to get the morning discussion started:

Paul Kuharsky mentions in his blog that 4 of Travis Henry's 6 100-yard games came against defenses that ended up ranked 26th or worse in the league.

Henry spent a 2nd night in Denver and talks could heat up this morning.

Kevin Carter is scheduled to meet with the Bucs today.  They are looking for a defensive end after losing Dewayne White to Detroit.

Terry McCormick mentions that talks between the Titans and Bobby Wade are pretty much non-existent.  The Titans initial offer was less than $1 million per year.

The same article mentions that Joe Horn's agent thinks he would be a good fit with the Titans.  It doesn't appear the Titans have contacted him.

The Titans need to have a couple of positive days here because things have been dim, to say the least, so far.  If anything breaks during the day don't hesitate to post it in the comments or in a diary.

Maybe
I think that maybe the Titans have a plan in mind.  I am sure that they will find some free agents to fill some holes and make an impact in the Draft.  I also think that Adam will be back but that the league may shut him down some games.

Has anyone heard if Chris Brown has had any lookers during the past few days?

by VY on Mar 5, 2007 8:55 AM CST reply actions

I haven't heard
anything at all about Brown.  There are a lot of RBs out there.

Brown
He could end up back with us.  He should be well rested and healthy.

stuff
-i'll puke all over the screen if I read we re-sign Chris Brown...

-Although I am disapointed we didn't try to make a big splash in FA (especially on defense), a more sensible long-term plan might work out great...

Sensible plan
I think those are great words.

Remember 2 years ago we drafted 3 WR's and just last year signed Givens.  Injury has ruined most the seasons for each of those WR's.

So letting Bennet and Wade go to me isn't a big deal.  Let your 3 picks and free agent pick up fail before freaking out. Also why draft 3 WR's and get a FA if you are happy with what you have???

Right now we have the 19th pick and 9 others.  Maybe we take a RB with the 19th, Maybe we take an impact DE with it.

But what I'm getting at is why spend money at RB and WR when you have the pieces in place.  Let them fail before you replace them.

What I'd like to see is a FA pick up at CB and then with the 19th pick go after a DE. Unless Johnson falls to us or we can make a great move up.

just my .02

I really
hope we don't take a RB at #19.  LenDale should be given a chance before we spend a #1 on another RB.

I don't think Cortney Roby or Roydell Williams are NFL quality receivers.  I will be extremely nervous if we are relying on one of them being or #2 behind Jones.  Givens will not be ready until the middle of the year at best.

DE is the position that has to be addressed first in my mind.

draft
I would put money that our 1st and 2nd round picks will be for DE and CB...but i won't wager on the order...

by zackmann on Mar 5, 2007 10:50 AM CST reply actions

Agree
I agree with you Jimmy about Not taking a RB with the 19th pick.  I'm a fan of Whites and I really think he can't be a Very good RB for us

I'd like to see more from Roby and Williams also.  But at the same time.  Why spend or draft another WR when in a years time your cabinet could be too "full" at that postion?

Like you I think we should jump all over a DE and DT in the early rounds.  Put on the field a pass rush and Run stopping front 4 and we will be able to mask any problems in the secondary.

by white02slpss on Mar 5, 2007 11:07 AM CST reply actions

We should
still take WR in 1st rd. CB in 2nd rd and DE in 3rd rd.  I trust in L.White, he looked good coming out, and I think he showed some promise last year.

Jimmy I really need your thought on something. I am not very optimistic right now based on what has gone on with Free Agency be it our guys leaving or other teams FA adds.

Do you think the Titans front office and or coaching staff feel that maybe Vince is not ready to take us to the next level yet?  Maybe they want to see another year out of him and then hit the Free agent market hard next year with all of our cap space.  That is the only way I see what has gone on thus far with free agency making any sense.  I would actually be happy and almost agree with them if that is the case.

That would also give what could possibly be a very good receiver in D.Givins more time to heal. He would be like adding another FA when he finally become healthy.

I have
trouble believing that is what is going on.  I just think the Titans have set a value on certain players and they aren't going to pay extra for them.

What have the truly lost so far?

Does anyone think they should have given Clements anything close to the money he got in San Fran?

Does anyone think Drew Bennett is worth the money he got in St. Louis?

My answer to both of those questions would be no.

Are they low balling Bobby Wade?

Probably, but how much is Bobby Wade worth to other teams.  Not that much in my opinion.

I just think they are playing conservative with the money.  No reason to burn $8 million on Henry's roster bonus if you don't have too.

Overall this is a weak FA class.  I think when the dust settles things will look a whole lot better than they do right now.

by Jimmy on Mar 5, 2007 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

i don't know about that...
Lamont Thompson and Reynaldo Hill gave up sooooo many big plays last year it will be hard to mask that problem. I really think we need to go corner and DE in that order.

I agree with those of you that say Lendale will be a good back... but not an EVERY DOWN BACK... he needs help and if he has to take on the whole load on his own we are in big trouble. Stay with us Travis!!!

Hill
Has to go!  Finnigan(sp) will be much better in his 2nd year.  Plus add a 2nd tier DB in FA is what I think we will do.  so unless jones is lost for the year we will be ok there.

by white02slpss on Mar 5, 2007 11:38 AM CST reply actions

I would
be in the minority, that I know. But I would say yes to Clements.  At the least we could have made some offers. But we pretty much took ourselves out to the bidding right away. The players in FA especially weak classes always get overpaid. It will be hard any year to get a corner with the talent of N.Clements with everyone using the franchise tags like they're going out of style.

I feel if we got Clements and only Clements we would be in a much better position. It would be the only player we would have spent a signifigant amount of money on.  Think about it, if we were only to sign him we would have a lot of cap space still to fill out other areas.

I also think that K.Hamlin would be a great fit for our team.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 5, 2007 12:30 PM CST reply actions

And as
far as what I think they've lost. A 1,200 yard rusher, a potential 1,200 yard receiver, and one of the best CB in the NFL in A.Jones.  Not that they are worth the money they got.  But regardless of price we still lost them.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 5, 2007 12:37 PM CST reply actions

San Fran
took us out of the running for Clements.  He went for his first visit and never left.  Not much you can do there.

I would have liked to see us trade for Bly, but that didn't happen either.

But I'm not worried at all

by white02slpss on Mar 5, 2007 1:08 PM CST reply actions

FYI - Last year
I keep seeing stuff saying we waited last year to sign our FA's, so people shouldn't freak out yet...

well, i think that is untrue...

I think FA last year started on March 11th...

We signed Thornton on the 13th...
We signed Mawea and Givens on the 14th...
We signed Hope on the the 15th...

So within 4 days, 4 above-average vets had visited and signed with the Titans...

Isn't today day 4?

by zackmann on Mar 5, 2007 1:17 PM CST reply actions

I don't understand
why we aren't even bringing people in.  I am still being patient though.

by Jimmy on Mar 5, 2007 1:29 PM CST up reply actions

i think it is pretty obvious
that we all just need to change our mindset...

we were all fooled into thinking that we were legitimate contenders this year...we are not...and the front office apparently thinks so to...

we are still in rebuilding mode...

we are going to try to draft towards the future, not sign anyone with heavy contracts that would hurt our cap space in the future years, and try to sign young guys with upside (or sign guys to short contracts) and let our young guys develop this year...

by not signing any contracts that eat up future cap space (signing bonuses for instance eat up future cap space) we are essentially saying that next year or the year after we are going to hit the FA market hard...

just another rebuilding year with playing alot of young players...i'm fine with it, now that I know that is what is going on...

Jimmy
its cool if you want to be patient. I just think the Titans are being too patient.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 5, 2007 2:19 PM CST reply actions

I think
1 of 2 things is going on here. 1. the guys we are after are still shopping themselves around.  2. We have enough players in place and were good enough last year to warrent another year in their postions.

Example. Hill was a sore spot on the team. But finnegan was suprising.  Suprising enough to me to warrent a chance at the spot in trainning camp.

Maybe if everyone underachives this year we will hit the FA market harder.

by white02slpss on Mar 5, 2007 2:24 PM CST reply actions

I guess
I was just looking forward to watching us make the playoffs next year.  I thought our team after Vince took over was better than a .500 team. I also thought we could have done some damage in the playoffs, at least put up a better fight than the teams that made it over us.  Now I will look forward to watching Vince progress next year.  And look forward to the playoffs the year after. Thank God, I am only 29.  I think now that Henry has left we should be happy with another 8-8 season.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 5, 2007 2:32 PM CST reply actions

You know MAYBE we'll make the playoffs anyways...
Serioulsy. Maybe we should just WAIT and see how it plays out once the season starts. MAYBE I'm just crazy, though.

by TitansFanatic on Mar 5, 2007 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

We really
don't have much choice do we?

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 5, 2007 2:45 PM CST reply actions

Randy McMichael
is reportedly being cut by the Dolphins today.  Fear not Titan fans we can get a better TE next year for less money. Need not bother calling this guy.
Then again he is a notorious woman beater so he will fit in well with our corner and our crazy DT.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 5, 2007 2:52 PM CST reply actions

It's makes me SICK
that we aren't doing all we can to take it to the next level... i guess i'm the only one who thinks the rebuilding could have been over... we have have our fantastic franchise quarterback a good O-Line A shut down corner a Pro Bowl caliber safety in Chris Hope. We HAD the 1000 rusher we let walk out the door. we WERE a few moves away from being an elite team.

We better have a kick ass draft... RRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

by Titans Fan 10 on Mar 5, 2007 2:55 PM CST reply actions

Okay...
The FA is pretty weak this year. Why waste money just to say we've spent it? Just because we have not made any "big" moves doesn't mean the team isn't trying to improve. They just might not be doing it the way we THINK they should.

Losing Henry hurts but who knows how that will really turn out.

by TitansFanatic on Mar 5, 2007 3:03 PM CST reply actions

I'm not
saying just spend or make "big" moves. But at least keep the core of your team together.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 5, 2007 3:08 PM CST reply actions

I'm not saying...
... waste money, I'm saying don't let people like Henry that fit so well here and exceded expectation leave and now we have one more need we'll have to address in the draft... it's not good i'm telling you
