Vince Young arrogant?

As of late i have heard a lot of people saying that Vince Young is arrogant or at least comes off as arrogant.. I am just curious as to why people think that is.

Comments?

So i need to burn a little more space on this diary, so what are some of your thoughts on the cowboys? I live in the Dallas area and I think they aren't as good as THEY think they are. Also, I'm not totally sold on Wade Phillips.

I'd argue that...
...almost all elite atheletes are arrogant--very arrogant.  In fact, it's my experience that a big part of their success comes from the fact that their self-esteem is tied up in their professional and/or athletic performance.  They will do WHATEVR THEY HAVE TO in order to succeed because that's one of the major ways that they validate themselves as people.  That's true of VY, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, most of the guys on Wall Street... whoever.  And I don't say that as a knock but as something I've observed as a former Division I college athlete (swimming; and quite arrogant about it in my time) and as a guy who did his MBA with some of the most heartless bastards on Wall Street.

Pride and/or arrogance breeds a need to succeed, which in turn breeds more pride.  It's a vicious or virtuous cycle.

On your second question: The Cowboys are a good but imperfect team, much like the Titans.  Signing Tony Romo long-term was good.  And personally, I think Wade Phillips is doing VERY well.

On a related note...
I was tailgating on Saturday for the Longhorn Game and talking with a guy who goes to Cape Cod in the summers.  Apparently, the foursome he plays golf with had a change to play golf with Jeff Fisher.

I am assuming this was during this last summer.  Jeff tells these guys, "Man, this Vince guy is killing me.  He never shows up to practice on time and doesn't listen.  He is a nightmare to coach."  He then references the incident where the team plane left without Vince when he was late.

What do you guys make of this?  I've always thought of Vince as an unselfish sort of player, especially with stories I've heard (ie. the letter to the players this offseason).

My thoughts
that story is full of crap. Even if Vince is a giant selfish tool(which he may be), Fisher would not say that to a bunch of outsiders. Woever told that story is simply a liar.

by DonFrancisco on Oct 31, 2007 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe...
But, it doesn't really sound like it.  And, my understanding is that it wasn't "a bunch of outsiders."  This was a group of men that knew Fisher fairly well.

I should preface this with the fact that I am one of the hugest VY fans you will ever meet.  Friends would admit that my allegiance is borderline obsessive.  So, I didn't post this to try and stir shit up.  I am also skeptical of every rumor I hear.  The gentleman who told me this is someone who certainly would not lie about this, as he is a big VY/Texas fan.

Refer to Occam's razor: "All things being equal, the simplest solution tends to be the right one."

Consider two possibities:

  1.  Jeff Fisher told a golfing buddy this information, which was then passed along to my family friend (let's call him Dave).
  2.  Jeff Fisher did not tell his golfing buddy.  Golfing buddy decides to lie to Dave, a 65 year old man with whom his is close friends with, about something trivial with which he serves nothing to gain.
Let's also consider a couple of other things.  If you look at this objectively, doesn't it at least make a little bit of sense.  Two instances come to mind:
  1.  Missing the team plane last year.
  2.  Being benched for the preseason game for not sleeping in the team hotel.
I don't want to confuse this with Vince being a bad teammate.  By all accounts, the entire team loves him and I saw first hand at Texas how his motivation can take a team to another level.  But, the context clues seem to reinforce the validity that Vince may not deal well with rules and authority.  In fact, I've read that it wasn't until Mack loosened up between VY's Sophomore and Junior year that they formed a strong relationship and Vince began to excel.

I believe it!
He was talking about Vince Scrimugium.  Practice Squad TE.

I'm sorry, but...
...that still sounds like an Urban Legend.  A good one.  One that can gain traction in the market.  But still... that's classic Urban Legend stuff.

To me, the simplest solution is this: 3rd-hand stories are not to be relied upon.  Maybe there's a grain of truth in there somewhere--I mean it's hardly impossible to believe that the veteran head coach would occasionally complain about his rookie QB--but between a few old golfing buddies, a few beers, and a desire to tell a story that genuinely entertains, many a classic Urban Legend is born.  Believe me.  I've inadvertantly (and sometimes purposefully) started several.

For example, my favorite from my own life was about this girl I went to college with.  She had a bit too much to drink one night and somehow fell asleep without her pants on a fraternity common-room sofa.  And then the brothers all gathered around and...  Well, anyway, it's a good story, and I'll bet it's true up to the point where she actually fell asleep at a Frat House one time.

While I disagree that it is completely made up...
I will entertain the idea that stories can get embellished.

Since this is a blog intended for discussion, I thought I'd pass along information which, to me, seemed to be genuine.  Nothing more, nothing less.

From the knee jerk reactions, you'd think that I said Vince Young hates children and kicks puppies.

Wait....
....that wasn't what you said?

I don't think it was a bad story.
And I don't think it was off-topic.  If mine was the knee-jerk reaction, then I'm the jerk 'cause all I meant to say is that these things can get out of hand by the time they get to the 3rd or 4th retelling.

I mean, I didn't buy the story wholesale, but that doesn't mean I don't think you should have posted it.  Hell, this thread gave me my main topic for my column this week.

It's true!
Me and Vince play Madden football online every night and he's always saying to me.  "F that!  It's my team and I'll show up when I want to and do what I want"

But he do like to play, just by his own standards!
